Kane Andrews is just another one of the billions of people on Earth who watch as Richter, the world's first superhuman, goes on a rampage. All the world's military cannot stop him, no matter what they throw his way. Until, with the whole world watching, Kane surprises himself by flying up to catch someone the supervillain has thrown off a building. With no idea of the extent or magnitude of his powers, Kane has a long way to go before becoming the first superhero. He must stay one step ahead of both Richter and the rest of the world while he figures out how to take down his nemesis. Time is running out, though, and Richter will do whatever it takes to make sure that he's Earth's only superhuman.

It really seemed to be written by a teen. Not saying that I could read better, but the narrator was one reason I quit the book. Good premise, but jeez.

Couldn't finish it

this story was awesome and exciting... all the possibilities this story has and in reading Kane growth was awesome... I look forward to the next book

I don't know why everyone is so hard on the narrator. He sounds just like the narrator who did all the Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children audiobooks. (another great series by the way) This narrator's voice sounds familiar and cozy to me.

Honestly, Iike it.

I really enjoyed the overall story and we'll definitely be checking out the next one. the narrator did a great job, and I felt particularly did a good job on women's voices which I think would be super hard.

loved it

While the story itself is extremely reminiscent of most classic superhero tales from the golden age, its modern take and realistic depictions of situations and scenarios that affect the main character and his supporting cast are engrossing and relatable enough to make you want to find out what happens next.

A solid realistic yet classic superhero story.

if you're looking for a an original concept for the superhero genre you will probably like this it's a little dark and gritty if you're a fan of the boys then this is probably something you would enjoy.

change of pace

felt like it could have been longer and more in depth. It was a little shallow. Hope the next one is better

Thought it was optional

This is a fun story about the orgin of ordinary people who discover they have superpowers.

Fun orgin story

It’s the villainous Richter vs the heroic Kane. For Richter, robbery and murder are fine, and a lot of the killings were random with no motivation other than to cause terror. Kane manifested his own abilities exactly when he needed them the most.

We never do know the motivations of Richter though there were repercussions that made it so that he would never relent. For Kane it was easy. He was a good kid who wanted to stop Richter’s reign of terror.

Kane wasn’t as strong as Richter, though perhaps that was more a case of experience rather than ability. It would only make sense otherwise of solar energy was necessary to replenish the abilities and he hadn’t been around long enough to fully charge. It’s not said so that’s just a guess.

Kane has little experience but a lot of interest in taking down the enemy. The media (government?) dubs him Tempest. He likes it but never in any way publicly mentions it.

The government doesn’t like Tempest. They don’t know if he’ll become another Richter. He is equally problematic in that his fights with Richter can be devastating to wherever they are.

Kane meets a government agent who doesn’t know he’s Tempest. The agent wasn’t nearly as suspicious as he should have been. There’s also a very good reason why, later on, he should have figured out who Tempest was, but he didn’t. The agent also admitted to certain information that he should not have. In both cases it shows he’s terrible at his job.

In some instances I wanted to ask why Tempest was so dense in asking questions rather than taking action but I realized that a teenager who is in the middle of a very scary situation is going to have more difficulties than someone who is leisurely sitting back to experience the story.

The ending was decent. Hero saves the day. But then what? We don’t know other than that sinister forces seem to be afoot. I think you could read this as a standalone. The ending isn’t enough of a cliffhanger that you have to follow up. I enjoyed it so I’m likely to continue with the series.

The narrator did a fine job and believe me when I say that I won’t listen to stories where a) I don’t like the style of the narrator or b) it’s virtual voice.
