Publisher's Summary

During the Depression, economic anxieties found an outlet in a series of child murders that triggered an irrational nationwide hysteria: pedophiliac psychopaths were overrunning the country.

As America was brought to rage and fury by the press and the FBI, lynch mobs took to the streets, reason gave way to doomsday scenarios, and one father was even driven to murder his three daughters to “save them” from a degenerate crime wave. A terrifying cautionary essay, Panic explores the combustible mix of unfounded fears, moral crusades, and the dangers of collective thinking.

Panic is part of Bloodlands, a chilling collection of short addictive historical narratives from bestselling true-crime master Harold Schechter. Spanning a century in our nation’s murderous past, Schechter resurrects nearly forgotten tales of madmen and thrill-killers that dominated the most sensational headlines of their day.

Gruesome knows no bounds

Could not finish the audiobook. The really horrifying thing is that these are historical accounts and that there will always be people with no regard for human (children) life. Still giving full marks, as the way this is put together is well done, I just could not continue listening.

Not as engaging as others in the series

I enjoy this series very much as a whole, but with the litany of other free true crime audiodramas out there they need to be exciting and have the ability to hold my attention, even at the price of free. Don't get me wrong, this is a good story and one that needed to be told and heard, its story simply isn't enough on it's own. the narration is a bit lacking on all of them but for most the story is enticing enough on it's own. This one could have benefited from a little more narrational flair.

Great Read/Listening Enjoyment.

Love being able to listen or read this book/audio. Very informative and the narrator carries the story along at an excellent pace. While part of a series, any one of these books/audios can be read/listened to un any particular order as each one is a standalone with a common thread (killers).

Note: I read & listened to this Series for Free as part of my Amazon Prime Membership.

Great Quick True Crime Tale

This was the first of this series that I listened to, and I really enjoyed it. It is quite different from the others I have since read, which do not stray from the true crime format.

Instead, this book looks at the panic in America during the 1930s regarding pedophilia. It does not look at one case/criminal, but a few cases. Even better, the book examines this type of hysteria--how and why it happens, how it still happens, etc.--very sociological.

These short books are a great bridge between longer works. And Steven webber does a fantastic job performing the book.

I highly recommend!

Sad, sick history

Panic is about sex and murder crimes against children in the past. It gives a run down of some some of the most sensational ones. It was hard to listen too.😢 The information was good and so was the narration but it was heartbreaking.

Can’t get enough

This was yet again another great story in the series. You can’t go wrong with any of the Bloodlands stories.

Good performance but tough listen

This was decent overall. The story itself is hard to listen to, but the performance is good.

Troubling story

Sad and tragic stories that only goes to remind the reader that this type of horrible behavior has been going on for a long time. Sadly, children have been and still are targets for abuse. The only positive is that parents and the public have become less tolerate of people who do these things and are more willing to step-in or speak out.
