Story
Louise has had to watch her husband, Andrew, start a new family in the four years since he left her. The ‘other woman’ is now his wife - but Louise isn’t ready to let Caz enjoy the life that was once hers or to let go of the man she still loves. As Louise starts to dig into Caz’s past, the two women’s pretence of civility starts to slip. But in trying to undermine each other, they discover more about the man they both married. And when Andrew is murdered at a family party, both women are found standing over the body. It’s always the wife. But which one?

There are two sides to every story: yours and mine, ours and theirs, his and hers. Which means someone is always lying. When a woman is murdered in Blackdown, a quintessentially British village, newsreader Anna Andrews is reluctant to cover the case. Detective Jack Harper is suspicious of her involvement, until he becomes a suspect in his own murder investigation. Someone isn’t telling the truth, and some secrets are worth killing to keep.

Publisher's Summary
Random House presents the audiobook edition of Open Your Eyes by Paula Daly, read by Julie Maisey.
Haven’t we all wanted to pretend everything is fine?
Jane doesn’t like confrontation. Given the choice, she’ll let her husband, Leon, fight their battles. She’d prefer to focus on what’s going well, the good things in life.
But when best-selling crime author Leon is brutally attacked in the driveway of their home, in front of their two young children, Jane has to face reality. With her husband in a coma, Jane must open her eyes to the problems in her life, and the secrets that have been kept from her, if she’s to find out who hurt her husband - and why.
Maybe it’s time to face up to it all. Who knows what you might find....

I have listened to all of Paula Daly’s books and thoroughly enjoyed each of them, but this time she has surpassed herself! A brilliant plot that kept me riveted from beginning to end. Excellent narration by Julie Maisey - I have been know to buy a book based on the narrator - I will certainly look for others performed by her. Congratulations to you both.

It has a Beginning, a Middle and an End.
Great to find a story that is strong enough in its own right to be written straight through from beginning to end without the need to keep jumping between time frames and narrators in order to add artificial excitement. It's a domestic, family thriller, with a normal woman set as the main character, constantly finding herself in jeopardy. The main characters (husband and wife) are writers or wanna-be writers, so interwoven with the plot, we get a wonderful insight into the world of writing and publishing. A particularly fine ending I thought. The main plot revolves around the husband being attacked and left in a coma. The wife having no income is forced to dig into his affairs and starts finding things (and dangers) that she really wasn't expecting. The book was well written and engaging. A good performance by Julie Maisey too - except perhaps for the few seconds of a Northern Irish accent!

Right riveting read but hate pets being involved
I really enjoyed this book, loved the insight into an author's life and also very unusual plot and did not see the twist coming. I do hate cruelty to animals being mixed up in otherwise solid murder mysteries and using them as an expendable device to ramp up the suspense to my mind is just a lazy short cut and I hate my enjoyment of a book being spoiled by dreading just how and what and when this emotional pawn will be dispatched. Lucky overall this was not a gory or over violent book, and while murder itself is not a matter to be taken lightly in the real world, with so much real and casual cruelty to animals I do think it really does not help to create more fictional animal abuse just to casually create added drama and menace as a subplot when it is a horrible and serious crime itself. I did not particularly like any of the characters but it was a good and very involving story. Narrator not one of my favourites but she did do a good job. Would try another Paula Daly book if the setting/outline appealed and I am tempted by "The mistake I made" but wary due to mixed reviews. I would recommend this to anyone who likes a good thriller now I know there was nothing too sadistic or upsetting in it.

Nearly gave up on it
The story finally goes up a notch around chapter 36. I only persevered because I needed to know the outcome. The plot had so many holes, it laboured on details which weren't essential to the flow, and was downright depressing. Her portrayal of family life was recognisable and the brain injury well portrayed. Imo the author is strong on character development but her plot credibility is weak. The narrator came off a tad nasally. Contrary to other reviews, I thought the ending was fitting.
