"Reminiscent of Liane Moriarty’s What Alice Forgot and Kate Atkinson’s Life After Life, Oona Out of Order is a delightfully freewheeling romp.” (Booklist, starred review)

Oona Out of Order is a remarkably inventive novel that explores what it means to live a life fully in the moment, even if those moments are out of sequence.

Just because life may be out of order, doesn’t mean it’s broken.

It’s New Year’s Eve 1982, and Oona Lockhart has her whole life before her. At the stroke of midnight she will turn 19, and the year ahead promises to be one of consequence. Should she go to London to study economics, or remain at home in Brooklyn to pursue her passion for music and be with her boyfriend? As the countdown to the New Year begins, Oona faints and awakens 32 years in the future in her 51-year-old body. Greeted by a friendly stranger in a beautiful house she’s told is her own, Oona learns that with each passing year she will leap to another age at random. And so begins Oona Out of Order....

Hopping through decades, pop culture fads, and much-needed stock tips, Oona is still a young woman on the inside but ever changing on the outside. Who will she be next year? Philanthropist? Club Kid? World traveler? Wife to a man she’s never met?

Surprising, magical, and heart-wrenching, Margarita Montimore has crafted an unforgettable story about the burdens of time, the endurance of love, and the power of family.

An uplifting joyride
"Imagine living your life out of order… What would it be like to be 19 years old on the inside forever? What would you do it you woke up tomorrow 30 years older than you are today? These are just a few of the questions you can’t help but ask yourself while listening to Oona—a delightful time travel novel that made me take my own trip down memory lane all while imaging various "what-if" scenarios for myself. How much fun would it be to have invested wisely (based on having already lived the future) and now have all of the money you could ever want or need? I’d have a Brownstone too, for sure. I also found myself immediately sympathizing with Oona—cringing at her many missteps and bad choices and reveling alongside her as she parties like a 27-year-old woman who’s already been a 51-year-old woman and is really only 19 years old on the inside. Narrator Brittany Pressley sounds exactly how I’d imagine Oona to sound—capturing the enthusiasm and hopefulness of a 19 year old who also holds a more tempered wisdom—something earned by having already lived so much of her later life." —Tricia F., Audible Editor

Awful

What a waste of a good story line. The main character is someone you'd avoid like the plague if you met her. Not in any of her lifetimes was she remotely likeable. Starts as a miserable old woman, next is a 90s slut. I kept reading and hoping but she remained unredeemed. I am trying to finish this book but at chapter 21 still find it appalling. This could have been a really great story but ended up a waste of paper. 0 stars. Or negitive stars.

Not my favorite.

The initial premise of moving through time was what caught my interest. However, I was not able to sympathize with Oona at the beginning of the book. I felt as if I was thrown into her story immediately without getting to actually know her. Scenarios were set into place, knowing as if I should sympathize with her but couldn’t. I only started enjoying the book near the last hour of this audiobook, not because I was almost finished with it but because I felt as if I finally had enough context about Oona. There were some storylines I did enjoy such as McKenzie and Madelines but Oona view on destiny and how she’s faces it left me frustrated. After finishing this book, I felt as if the chapters were severely rushed, I would’ve loved to here more details and experiences but there is only so much someone can write within a set number of chapters. It left me with the feeling of wanting more from an unfinished story, not with glee but frustration and disappointment. On the plus side, I do love the narrators voice.

First favorite book of 2020!

so, this rocketed to the top of my “favorite 2020 book releases” list. super relatable, and such a unique way to tell someone’s life story! it was so interesting to start off with Oona younger than me, then older, then younger but barely etc - it creates such a unique fiction experience! it is such a positive spin on aging, too - I’m really happy I went with my instinct on purchasing this book! definitely one that I think was meant for me to read this year. 🎧📚✨ plus, it’s super inclusive - trans, queer & PoC main characters & it’s not ignored nor made out to be The Only Defining Trait - just so many great things to say about this book!

What am I missing? Boring, trite

What am I missing that so many others love? This book misses the mark in so many ways. The premise is good, book should be good, but it is poorly executed.
I am 4 hours into it and I give up. There doesn’t seem to be a point.

Gen X Love/Life Story

This was the perfect listen for so many reasons! I’m a first generation X and all of the cultural references were on point and made me feel equal parts nostalgic and optimistic. The narration is flawless and the story is compelling. Fantastical and romantic, Oona’s life story is wonderful.

A new favorite for my library on here.

Despite how confusing time travel can be, this is an excellent story, for her first novel that I've heard from her. Brittany Pressley's narration is excellent, tones, inflections and all. Would highly recommend it.

Not What I Expected

I listened to almost 3 hours and had to stop, I couldn't get into it and it was very slow moving. It was hard to get into and very hard to relate. I understand it's a fiction but the character wasn't very likable, she woke up in incredible situations but was whiny the whole time and couldn't enjoy what she had. The rules that the author put in place also didn't seem to make sense with what happened. Just not for me.
