Story
In the dead of winter, outside a small Minnesota town, state troopers pull two young women and their car from the icy Black Root River. One is found downriver, drowned, while the other is found at the scene - half-frozen but alive. What happened was no accident, and news of the crime awakens the community's memories of another young woman who lost her life in the same river 10 years earlier and whose killer may still live among them.

Story
In Riversend, an isolated rural community afflicted by an endless drought, a young priest does the unthinkable, killing five parishioners before being taken down himself. A year later, accompanied by his own demons from wartime reporting, journalist Martin Scarsden arrives in Riversend. His assignment is to describe how the townspeople are coping. But as Martin meets the locals and hears their version of events, he begins to realize that the accepted wisdom - that the priest was a pedophile whose imminent exposure was the catalyst for the shooting - may be wrong.

Story
Ava only left her daughter in the pushchair for five minutes. The buckle was fastened, and she was sure it was safe. But when she came downstairs, the door was open and Abi was gone - she walked down the road, past the Lovegoods' house, and was never seen again. A year later, the Lovegoods throw a housewarming party, showing off the results of their renovation. Ava doesn’t want to go. She can’t bear to look down that end of the road, to see the place where Abi vanished, and she doesn’t want to spend time with people who don’t share her grief.

Worth it - GETS better with the END
I was mildly frustrated in beginning to middle (drawn out) and then picked up in middle and last 1/3 was a home run and worth the wait. And the end even made the slow parts worth the wait! Great narration.

Disappointing . . . guessed the "twist" early on
Would you ever listen to anything by Tina Seskis again?
Probably not, since the twist that other reviewers said was such a surprise, was something I guessed within the first hour of the audiobook. Through the next several hours, I kept imaging other interesting / shocking things that could have been great twists, and was really disappointed when none of those happened. Also, the whole story was too depressing, which doesn't bode well for any of the author's other books, and several events in the story that could have been interesting, were too quickly glossed over. I certainly won't be rushing to check out her other works.
Any additional comments?
I often listen to audiobooks while driving, and this one was often hard to hear over the road noise even with the volume all the way up. I had to keep re-listening to sections when I wasn't driving - which I wouldn't have minded as much if it had been a better book. I haven't had this problem with other audiobooks I've gotten from Audible, so it's probably the volume leveling on this specific book.

Didn't See That Coming....
Excellent debut novel by Tina Seskis. I myself did not see the ending coming. Some may not like the device used for this, but i loved it. I won't elaborate further as to not spoil, but i thoroughly enjoyed this novel. Excellent narration as well.

Perfect and gripping.
This book is by far my favorite read of the last 12 months. I so wish she had written more in english for I would read every single one of her works.
It was very difficult to put this book down, as mysteries and fascinating twists unfold with intriguing and delicious timing.
It ended all to soon but what a great ending!

Must read!!
This was a book that I found difficult to follow in the beginning. It kept switching around- going back to the past then present. But once I got into it I couldn't stop! I wanted to listen to it all the time. Very enjoyable and all of the characters were well-developed and likable people.

Tear-jerker
Based on the reviews I read, I was eager to see how the story would unfold. It is true, the beginning is a bit slow. I was not prepared for the dramatic, emotional ending. So, you have been warned. I wish stories like this came with a disclaimer. Something like, "Warning: if you have had children in the past two years or you are currently pregnant, do not read unless prepared to cry your eyes out." The story-telling was amazing. I was really able to connect with each character. All in all, it was a good listen.
