Publisher's summary

“A subtly but relentlessly unsettling novel.” (TANA FRENCH, author of The Witch Elm)

It was the perfect place to disappear....

One sultry summer, Maureen Haddaway arrives in the wealthy town of Opal Beach to start her life anew - to achieve her destiny. There, she finds herself lured by the promise of friendship, love, starry skies, and wild parties. But Maureen’s new life just might be too good to be true, and before the summer is up, she vanishes.

Decades later, when Allison Simpson is offered the opportunity to house-sit in Opal Beach during the off-season, it seems like the perfect chance to begin fresh after a messy divorce. But when she becomes drawn into the mysterious disappearance of a girl 30 years before, Allison realizes the gorgeous homes of Opal Beach hide dark secrets. And the truth of that long-ago summer is not even the most shocking part of all....

“A heart-wrenching and suspenseful novel of betrayal and revenge. Stunning!” (Carol Goodman, award-winning author of The Night Visitors)

“Featuring a brilliantly executed dual timeline with two unforgettable narrators, One Night Gone is a timely and timeless mystery that will keep you obsessively reading well past your bedtime.” (Paul Tremblay, author of The Cabin at the End of the World)

good not great

This was an entertaining book and I finished it quite quickly. I enjoyed the characters (definitely the younger character was more developed than the older one). Not totally believable but still enjoyed. Not necessarily a book you would think about after its finished.

Move over Gillian Flynn

This was the most well written and intelligent thriller I have read outside of Gillian Flynn. The only bummer is that this is Laskowski’s first book and God knows how long I have to wait for more!

Over dramatic and mediocre

I struggled to finish it most, definitely. Narrator was fine but, the story was poorly written, and ALL the characters were dull.
perhaps, in the 80s it would have been interesting but, no. No character development, no characters were likable and only finished because, I wanted to know what actually happened to Maureen. And then it just dragged on and on. Boring story, boring ending. Very, disappointing.

Mediocre plot with a semi surprising twist

The plot was fairly predictable but a little underdeveloped. The setting was in the 1980s; yet, it didn’t feel like that time period was being described. At first, Maureen was a likeable character but towards the end, it was hard to sympathize with her character. Despite the semi surprising twist at the end, it wasn’t hard to predict what happened to her once it was known who she became involved with. The narrators did a great job, which sadly was the only reason I was able to finish this audiobook.

good story idea but only so so writing

I almost returned this but figured I was mainly using to go to sleep by so I kept it. It did pick up after a slow start but there is no comparison to Gillian Flynn as some reviewers have stated. The narration isn't bad but the writing is pretty basic.

Great narrators, weak story

This plot was very weak, too many implausiblities, and too preachy on the issue of disposable women. The narrators were excellent, but couldn't save this lame attempt at suspense.

I’m sorry but this has no truth to me…

If you’re from Philly, it’s DOWN THE SHORE not remembering days The Beach!!
If you can’t that right, then you’ve lost me. Because you don’t know that anyone who’s from Philadelphia knows it’s called DOWN THE SHORE.

Fandamntastic book!

Kept me on edge the WHOLE time, characters very real, loved the socioliogal undercurrent and especially how we view pretty beach towns as little utopias-when they're little Mafia enclaves. Brilliant!
