BRUTALLY HONEST

What a great, honest, enlighting book that speaks to any addict or person who has struggled with what life throws at you. This shows that addiction can attack anybody regardless of your upbringing, This is a great read!

Reads like a movie

An alcoholic and a drug addict, author Austin Rampt’s story starts where many others begin as well, looking for acceptance and belonging.

“One Last Hit” starts with the feeling of the needle, piercing the skin as the electricity of the high begins to flow. Rampt begins by first explaining to readers exactly what he chased, the sensations that unfurled as the necessity of the high crept in. Giving up possessions, friends, and life for this very feeling, readers start by understanding the feeling he sought before being taken back to the very beginning.

Whether it was that first cigar on a dock with a friend or the alcohol grabbed alongside the rest of the kids at the party, the joy Rampt felt through these encounters as they gave him a way to fit in, drove that very first endorphins rush. Living in a home devoid of emotions, these substances were the catalyst that first turned off the anxiety, quieting the noise inside his own head. Seeking relief from the storms within him, Rampt found that acceptance became his currency. From consuming to dealing, casual to addict, “One Last Hit” is his story.

Living in the heart of the opioid epidemic, square in America’s heartland and farm fields, Austin’s story is sadly not surprising. Having lost several friends and family members to addiction myself, Rampt’s trajectory to addiction is not unique. Beginning at an early age, the feeling of fitting in and being accepted are strong motivators. When these feelings seem to revolve around addictive substances, the high is only magnified. Managing burgeoning baseball talent, making money dealing drugs, and working in restaurants to get out of school early, Rampt juggled a lot. Ultimately landing in a Teen Challenge rehab, and later a $35,000 one, he enters both with no real desire to get better.

Escaping only to get high and walk back in the front door the next day, Austin burnt a lot of bridges at the height of his addiction, literally burning down his house at one point. Rising from the ashes Austin begins to make a storybook life for himself, until addiction creeps back in. Disappearing to Mexico, Rampt makes a life for himself, hotel to hotel, as he mingles with the cartel, only worried about staying high.

Reading more like a movie than real life, Austin’s story is so wild it could only be the truth, a sobering account of one man’s struggle with addiction. “One Last Hit” details the lengths one will go to get that next high. Set back after set back, this read thankfully ends where so many others’ stories don’t, sober and happy. Clawing his way out, Rampt fights the desire within him, breaking free and telling his sobering story.
