Story
Iggy is a dog who doesn’t get out much, so it’s big news when elderly Mr. Parsons knocks on Bernie’s door to say that Iggy has vanished. In the search for Iggy, Chet and Bernie find Mrs. Parsons unconscious on her bedroom floor, in need of urgent medical care. But it’s only when they arrive at the hospital that things get really interesting. With a jewel thief making short work of hospital patients’ valuables, it seems that Iggy is not alone in disappearing right out from under somebody’s nose. Suspects are plentiful and witnesses are few.

Retired lawyer Andy Carpenter’s calling has always been running the Tara Foundation. The dog rescue organization places hundreds of dogs in new homes every year. It’s added up to so many dogs and new owners that Andy can’t even do the math. But there’s one dog—and one owner—Andy will always remember. About a year ago, Rachel Morehouse came to the foundation looking for a companion. In her sixties and recently widowed, Rachel wanted a senior dog that also needed someone. Publisher's Summary
When Chet the dog, "the most lovable narrator in all of crime fiction" (Boston Globe), and his partner, PI Bernie Little of the desert-based Little Detective Agency, arrive to a meeting with hydrologist Wendell Nero, they are in for a shocking sight - Wendell has come to a violent and mysterious end.
What did the hydrologist want to see them about? Is his death a random robbery, or something more? Chet and Bernie, working for nothing more than an eight-pack of Slim Jims, are on the case.
Bernie might be the only one who thinks the police have arrested the wrong man, including the perp's own defense attorney.
Chet and Bernie begin to look into Wendell's work, a search that leads to a struggling winemaker who has received an offer he can't refuse. Meanwhile, Chet is smelling water where there is no water, and soon Chet and Bernie are in danger like never before.

Love the Chet and Bernie Adventures
This is another great Chet and Bernie story. It’s easy to follow Chet’s train of thought If you’ve ever had big love filled dogs… All the adults and kids in my family get really excited every time a new book comes out. They are about the best and the worst of human nature, and of course the best in our canine friends.

I love listening to Chet explain life in the Little Detective Agency. for a K9, he understands people better than people do.

Back to form
If you have a dog, you'll like this series. I admit that recently I felt the author was getting repetitive and much of the joy of the first books had given way to formulaic drudgery, But just when I was giving up in the series, with this book it looks like the author got his mojo back. Chet is FUN again. So many times when I was "yeah, that's what I'm sure MY dog is thinking"! And a good detective story on top to boot, whereas the last few were just boring or a bit to far-fetched.

TipTop story and narration as always. I re-listen to the older volumes when the news of the world becomes too grim for me. This new offering made me laugh out loud a few times while walking along, listening through the streaming feature of my hearing aids, getting startled looks from other walkers. It’s been 65 years since I’ve owned a dog, but Chet’s voice makes me love every dog I see. Can’t wait for the next one! Will there be a Slim Jim for me? I hope so!

Story
Holiday time in the Valley, and in the holiday spirit - despite the dismal shape of the finances at the Little Detective Agency - Bernie refers a potential client to Victor Klovsky, a fellow private eye. It’s also true that the case - promising lots of online research but little action - doesn’t appeal to Bernie, while it seems perfect for Victor, who is not cut out for rough stuff. But Victor disappears in a rough-stuff way, and when he doesn’t show up at his mom’s to light the Hanukkah candles, she hires Chet and Bernie to find him.
