Story
The ancient magic of wizards was anything but dark. It was the enlightenment that lifted humanity from the squalor of superstition, and the worship of fell spirits and capricious gods, but those days are gone. The shining glory of the sorcerers burned away the subtlety of wisdom, replacing it with easy power, held only in the hands of the elite - a new age built upon the elemental supremacy of aristocrats and the ignorance of the masses.

Publisher's Summary
The brave, burning with fire, harnessed the Dragon's Rage...
As the Dragon Heir, 17-year-old Kaia inherited the power of flame to protect her homeland from a godlike necromancer’s undead army. But after centuries of peace, the necromancer has faded to myth, and the Dragon Heir is feared by the people. Persecuted and cast out, Kaia struggles to embrace and control her seemingly useless gift while confined to her family’s farm.
But when the necromancer’s undead terrorize the land once again, Kaia runs away to join the battle.
With the help of her childhood rival, the handsome Shadow Heir, and a snarky, cursed cat, Kaia must figure out how to control both her fire and her confidence in time to save Okarria. If she fails, she will sacrifice her family, her new friends, and the enchanting world she has only just begun to see.
And time is running out.

A unique fantasy with a variety of characters!
At 17 Kaia was a young woman who inherited a power that was both very powerful and very deadly. The power she had to learn to harness and use to protect her family and homeland was the power of flame. This power burned bright as the Dragon’s Rage. Seeking her father, Kaia finds herself along with a childhood frenemy – Shadow Heir – the only two powerful and cunning enough to defeat the necromancer and his army. Was she strong enough physically and emotionally to handle the responsibility of fighting the undead army and rescue her homeland after being exiled?
Hayley Reese Chow, author, demonstrated Kaia’s growth throughout the story as well as the other characters splendidly. I enjoyed the talking animals and the budding romance. Rich in details and description Chow gives the listeners a treat. There was a balance of awe and twists that left the listener wondering what was next.
The dialog and character development kept the story moving. The storyline was well developed and moved at a solid pace. The romance was timid and slow which was perfect for this story – the listener never lost sight of the romance or the impending fight. The side characters were well done also – just enough about them to keep the story moving. The snarky cat was a nice touch.
The narrator, Claire Nicholls performed this audiobook very well. I thought her narration was flawless and her tone set the appropriate mood for the book. The voice of Kaia was perfect for a 17-year-old woman who had doubts and fears. I found her voice soothing and exhilarating in the right places.
This is definitely a strong, unique and epic fantasy in which one can easily lose one’s self in the story. Between the plot and the narrator, this book was highly enjoyable. I look forward to reading more by Chow and hearing more books narrative by Ms. Nicholls.

Unique Epic Fantasy
This is a new author for me and I’m glad I decided to give it a try. The story starts slow and it took me awhile to get invested into the story. The world building is moderate and the story develops slowly. There is a large number of characters being introduced and it becomes a little overwhelming to try to keep up with them.
Narration was ok but I had to speed it up a bit to get the story moving at a better pace.
The story was unique with fun talking animals and an army of undead to defeat. The heroine does a lot of growth during her journey. She evolved from a scared teen girl to the dragon heir she is destined to be.
This story has action, mystery, adventure, a necromancer, undead, and a touch of romance. The main character is a dragon heir which is feared by her own people but destined to save them from the necromancer army of undead.
The story wraps up nicely after an epic battle. I’m looking forward to seeing more of kaia & Klaus.

Absolutely Fantastic!
Wow. I feel like this story was written entirely with my own preferences in mind. It was such a perfect fit. The heroine was strong, loyal, and extremely likeable. I loved her connection to family and her ragehound, Gus. Her journey to self-discovery was well executed and enjoyable to read. Her counterpart, the Shadow Heir, was the perfect amount of light to her dark, and his moody mutters and frequent teasing had me smirking throughout the story. Oh, Klaus. You truly are an idiot sometimes, aren't you?
I spent the entire day finishing this book, as I couldn't seem to keep from reading / listening during any spare moment of the day. The narrator had a lovely voice, and was very pleasant to listen to. Needless to say, I LOVED this book and look forward to reading / listening to lots more by Hayley Reese Chow!
