Just After Sunset - call it dusk, call it twilight, it's a time when human intercourse takes on an unnatural cast, when nothing is quite as it appears, when the imagination begins to reach for shadows as they dissipate to darkness and living daylight can be scared right out of you. It's the perfect time for Stephen King.

A master storyteller at his best - the O. Henry Prize winner Stephen King delivers a generous collection of stories, several of them brand-new, featuring revelatory autobiographical comments on when, why, and how he came to write (or rewrite) each story. Magnificent, eerie, utterly compelling, these stories comprise one of King's finest gifts to his constant fan. "I made them especially for you," says King. "Feel free to examine them, but please be careful. The best of them have teeth."

Located off a desolate stretch of Interstate 50, Desperation, Nevada, has few connections with the rest of the world. It is a place, though, where the seams between worlds are thin. And it is a place where several travelers are abducted by Collie Entragian, the maniacal police officer of Desperation. Entragian uses various ploys for the abductions, from an arrest for drug possession to "rescuing" a family from a nonexistent gunman.

Story
On a brisk autumn day, a 13-year-old boy stands on the shores of the gray Atlantic, near a silent amusement park and a fading ocean resort called the Alhambra. The past has driven Jack Sawyer here: His father is gone, his mother is dying, and the world no longer makes sense. But for Jack everything is about to change. For he has been chosen to make a journey back across America - and into another realm. One of the most influential and heralded works of fantasy ever written, The Talisman is an extraordinary novel of loyalty, awakening, terror, and mystery.

The audiobook that started it all...
I used to own N&D Vol. II on cassette and listened to these tales as bedtime stories, so I am completely biased when expressing my affection for them. I can say, having heard these stories over and over again, The Doctor's Case is my personal favorite. For those who aren't familiar, it's actually a Sherlock Holmes story, very well read by Tim Curry. I also loved Sneakers, read by David Cronenberg. Ferris Buel- I mean Matthew Broderick, Kathy Bates, Jerry Garcia, Lindsay Crouse, and Eve Belgarian(?) contribute their vocal talents to the other stories, which range from life advice( My Pretty Pony) to silly horror (The Moving Finger). Nevertheless, I really enjoyed most of these stories, but I have a very soft spot for Home Delivery. This one, about an end of the world scenario (not the only one in this volume), is read by the Master of Horror himself, Stephen King. Some people don't care for his narration. I LOVE listening to King talk. Check Needful Things if you want a sample. This collection is the reason I listen to audiobooks today.

Better than his novels
I like King's short stories better than his novels, which I often feel are too long. This and his other short story compilations allow you to enjoy his writing in more easily digestible pieces. The audio version is great for commuting because you can finish a story in 1 to 2 hours.

What a rip-off.
Bought 2 volumes expecting the usual brilliant King works and WHAT a disappointment. Out of the 14+ hours in the volumes, only 3 were worth listening to and those weren’t very good. I think King scraped together his detritus and then dumped it out not in one but broken into 2 volumes. I guess to make more money but. Wow. Sad.

It's ok
the first one has better and more king style stories. even if the last one was about his kids little league(which I enjoyed listening to throughly). but this one felt like the least of his style, except for the last two. I thought those were superb 10/10. now onto volume 3
