The incredible return to the New York Times bestselling world of the Night Angel, where master assassin Kylar Stern embarks on a new adventure as the High King Logan Gyre calls on him to save his kingdom and the hope of peace.

"Weeks has been showing other fantasy authors how it's done for over fifteen years." — Peter V. Brett, author of The Desert Prince

"Weeks is a giant of the genre." — Nicholas Eames, author of Kings of the Wyld

After the war that cost him so much, Kylar Stern is broken and alone. He's determined not to kill again, but an impending amnesty will pardon the one murderer he can't let walk free. He promises himself this is the last time. One last hit to tie up the loose ends of his old, lost life.

But Kylar's best—and maybe only—friend, the High King Logan Gyre, needs him. To protect a fragile peace, Logan’s new kingdom, and the king’s twin sons, he needs Kylar to secure a powerful magical artifact that was unearthed during the war.

With rumors that a ka'kari may be found, adversaries both old and new are on the hunt. And if Kylar has learned anything, it’s that ancient magics are better left in the hands of those he can trust.

If he does the job right, he won’t need to kill at all. This isn’t an assassination—it’s a heist.

But some jobs are too hard for an easy conscience, and some enemies are so powerful the only answer lies in the shadows.

"Weeks writes in an inescapably engaging style. Breathlessly high stakes, terrible missteps, and unexpected revelations keep the story humming along at a breakneck pace." — Andrea Stewart, author of The Bone Shard Daughter

the NAT was my first "adult" books alongside the dresden files, and when I first read them they were amazing, I still reread them occasionally. I can't say the same for this one. honestly picking up kylars story soon after the events of the trilogy was a mistake, the plot was inconsistent with the universe I came to love, and there wasn't any of the same gritty bloody wet boy/warrior conflictions that I came to know and love with in this book. so many plot holes, and the "plot twist" was so underwhelming that it would've been better without it, or something very different.

Brent dude, bro. come on. yes kylar is the "rookie with a big badass cannon on his hip" but why do you do him like this? with this book, you threw away over half of what you wrote about over a decade ago. there was no complexity to the story line, no kylar using what durzo trained him to do, and learning from the OT.

now the good side, the ending I had mixed feelings about, if a reader can suffer through the lore breaking and inconsistent plot holes and the obvious questions everyone has as they read/listen in the storm racer acts, it makes a really good heist/ kidnapping story, but not a fantasy novel.

I'm sorry Brent but, I hope the next story it gets better.

I want to love it

Kylar has gone from the lean sleak street smart assassin with an incredible tool to make everything easier. Now he is Kip the Lip from the authors other series the light bringer.

I waited so long for a continuation to the night angel trilogy. honestly I'm disappointed I love both series and its clear to me the writing style and hell the way they narrated the audiobook is from his other series.

example time:

The black Ka'Kari has gone from being his best friend and ally who developed a great relationship with to suddenly being aggressive and useless. suddenly there is magic this magic that but magic. that's not how the night angel trilogy went. It honestly feels like someone reanimated all the characters and tried to make a new story over another story entirely.

I listened to the audiobook and now I'm going back and reading the book in text. what a fantastic author. I wish all fantasy was this invigorating!

so glad he's back!

Basically a continuation of the original 3 but completely from Kylers view point. Unfortunate they removed some of the best and most interesting characters from this book completely. The main enemy conflict points never landed to a threat or really anything precarious for Kyler. Unfortunate.

Pity party & predictable

I would definitely recommend the series. I read the series as a graphic audio so reading/listening to this was different but still love the story of kylar stern.

would recommend series

Another great book in this awesome series. This book has more character introspection and self explaining the usual but it fit the story. I heartily recommend investing you time into this adventure.

Deep, emotional and thrilling

I adore Vance as a narrator.
Brent's evolution in writing/carrying multiple perspectives is amazing, and I'm thoroughly pleased that he not only brought that evolution back to the night angel series, but also expanded his fantasy universe by connecting his "thousand worlds". I haven't finished the book yet, but I'm enjoying every word- And not just because of Simon Vance's amazing voice!

Fantastic!!

Was so excited to see a new book come out in this series… Guess I’ll continue remembering it as a trilogy though. The story pacing feels odd and is trying to do too much. The character development is lacking. This book wants to be a fantasy version of “Murder on the Orient Express” wrapped into global political intrigue and narrated by a horny 16 year old boy. This is my least favorite Brent Weeks book I’ve ever read/listened to. The narrator was fine for what he’s working with in this one.

Disappointed Fan

I enjoyed the first three books and this one did not disappoint. Can’t wait for the next.

Great story and performance

If you’re a Weeks’ fan you know what this means. If you’re not… keep reading. This work is a beautiful way to to connect all his series together and allow them to stand alone as well. Another great addition to the universe.
