The son and grandson of cops, Officer McDonald was shot and paralyzed from the neck down while on patrol in 1986. The doctors said that if he did survive, he would be better off dead. It was then he came under the care of one Nurse Nina Justiniano. Where the teenage gunman was produced by the worst of Harlem's social ills, she personified its many graces, rescuing Steven from despair and urging him to transcend hate and bitterness.

McDonald was then promoted to detective at the urging of NYPD Deputy Commissioner Jack Maple, a postal worker's son who sported a bow tie, Homburg hat, and two-tone shoes as he implemented transformative crime-fighting strategies to deter violent subway robberies. Coming up in the force, Maple had been routinely mocked for imagining the impossible: that Times Square would one day be a destination for families and tourists.

Now, resentments and tensions are mounting in the same neighborhoods that most benefited from the careful consideration of officers like McDonald and Maple. A Tour de Police Force of the NYC’s Finest

A terrific book from beginning to end. Never flags, and even the many statistics mentioned only add impact to the themes and arguments made by the author. Steven McDonald and Jack Maple are correctly portrayed as the most heroic of the many heroes and heroines that paroled the streets and subway “caves” and investigated crimes to make the Big Apple one of the safest big cities in the U.S., at least until 2021.

Even the narrator’s New York accent adds authenticity to the content. My only quibble with the narrator, is the way he often pauses before saying, “he said” or “she said.”

Sadly lost interest

I lost interest. Good stories ruined by overemphasis on race. It detracts from an other wise good method of story telling.

Very disappointing

Author makes every effort to describe NYPD officers as racists.
Most police officers would be disappointed with this choice.

Monotone

A great story ruined by a terrible reader. The monotone voice of the reader makes it impossible to get through this book. It's like listening to hours on end of movie phone.
