Publisher's Summary

Wall Street Journal bestselling author Charlie N. Holmberg builds her bewitching world of beasts and betrayal as the Numina Series continues.

Sandis has escaped Kazen’s grasp, but she finds herself unmoored, reeling from her thief friend Rone’s betrayal.

Kazen has been hurt but not stopped, and he’ll do anything to summon the monster that could lay waste to the entire world. Sandis knows she must be the one to stop him, but with her own trusted numen now bound to another, and finding herself with no one she can trust, she is in desperate need of allies. Rone seems determined to help her, but Sandis has no intention of letting him get close to her again. What she doesn’t know is how much Rone gave up to protect her. Or how much more he is willing to give up to keep her safe.

As chaos mounts, Sandis must determine whom to trust. After all, the lines between enemy and ally have never been less clear…and corruption lurks in the most unlikely of places.

Hate Book 2 in Series

Why is this SO bad. There's constant, repetitive mental beration by a main character. There's an insistence that the MOST obvious solution to the melodrama between the 2 heros is a simple 30 second conversation that must wait until 3 or 4 hours into this book. If the most logical path is open to the characters, they ignore it. The main characters become conveniently stupid and clumsy at nearly every critical turning point in this book.... if they can fall when being chased, they trip and fall like a bad horror movie.... if there's a 100% wrong decision to be made, that's the one they go with... if they decide not to use an obvious advantage they have, it's chalked up to just not thinking of it ??? This was non-stop misery when combined with the narration of the heroine in this specific book.

Not her best work.

Too much violence. Confusing when Scott is talking like a woman and Lauren talks male.

love love love...

This is a great story! I absolutely love the twists and turns... The last 30 seconds seriously gave me goosebumps! Starting the 3rd book now! This is an amazing author and I highly recommend anything written by her!

Great story, very good narration.

The story is a little less intriguing than the first book, and seems like it's just a filler/setup for the third. Great two person narration

Too Slow

I was so excited to finally have time for this book. To my great disappointment, it dragged on and on. I kept waiting for it to pick up. It never did. In agony, at chapter 18, I'm still struggling to endure. I am at the point of just wanting the book to be over because I am convinced that the storyline is not going to get any better. At this point in time i do not see myself going on to the next book.

Great story, but the female narrator over does it.

Love this storyline and the characters. But the female narrator simply over-acts on every single line she reads. Her voice is either quivering with fake fear or sounds like she is crying or ready to cry at all times. There is no down time, no regular breaks to simply...narrate. She never stops to over-acting through all three books. When the make narrator comes on its a pleasant break. I had listened to over a hundred audio books, and this series is the only one where the “acting” was do bad and distracting that I felt forced to write a review. Great story, fantastic writing on this novel. The partial delivery is beyond annoying.

Could have been 5 stars but for one thing

Great story. I really enjoyed it except for one thing. There were two voices for the the character Rone. I hope for the third book they figure out how to use only one narrator for each character. I appreciated that the author did not spend any time clueing people in to what happened in book one. Thank you for that. I thought book two was even stronger than book one (and I enjoyed that book a great deal) I can hardly wait for book three.

Great Sequel to the first

I liked this book very much and thought it was a great follow-up to Smoke & Summons. I can't wait to see what Holberg has in store for her next one in this series. Really great fantasy stories from an author I love
