From the Civil War-era south, to 1950's New York, to the present day's gritty cities and seemingly innocuous suburbs, the 18 stories in this anthology, edited by the award-winning mystery writer Harlan Coben, chart the complications - always surprising, sometimes deadly - that arise between lovers, dear friends, and even complete strangers coming together for a single, shocking encounter.

In Lee Child's "Safe Enough", a blue-collar city boy takes up with a wealthy suburban wife, with dire consequences. In Harlan Coben's "Entrapped", a woman's husband disappears and is replaced by a handsome impostor. In Laura Lippman's "One True Love", a high-end prostitute seeks a radical solution to a public relations problem. Finally, in P. J. Parrish's "One Shot", a man returns to his childhood home to learn the truth about a long-ago tragedy.

Other contributors of original stories include Ridley Pearson, R. L. Stine, Jim Fusilli, Jeff Abbott, Charles Todd, and Tom Savage.

Reseñas editoriales

Eighteen fine mystery writers contribute to a collection of "love-and-hate stories" that, as editor Harlan Coben warns in the introduction, end badly for somebody. The narrators do a superb job, whether it's getting into the persona of a federal agent in "The Home Front" or a hysterical wife in Coben's "Entrapped" or setting the scene in "The Last Flight" or re-creating a tense father-son situation in "A Few Small Repairs." "Part Light, Part Memory," told by the daughter of a man lynched in 1865, will stick with listeners, as will the rat-a-tat-tat delivery of "Cyberdate.com."

Any additional comments?

I usually expect a book of short stories to have a few excellent stories which I thoroughly enjoy and all the others in which I have no interest at all. This one was no exception. Five of the twenty stories were fascinating and the other fifteen held my attention for about three minutes each and I did not listen further. My short fuse for a good story might be unusual, but I have learned from long experience that, for me, if I'm not all in by the end of the first page, I am not going to be in at all. That does not bother me. The five excellent stories were worth the price of the book and I am well satisfied and entertained.

Several excellent short stories

Nothing in particular either way. A couple stories were fairly predictable. Some were quite interesting.

Some great, some so so. But entertaining all.

These short stories are right up your alley, if you like murder, mayhem and mishap with hubby, wife and or friend. I don't have a favorite, but there wasn't any I didn't dislike, except maybe one that ended to abruptly.

A LOT OF NICE SHORT STORY'S

Not a fan of multiple stories throughout the same book. Authors lacked effort to perform their best in this environment.

Nothing
