A collection of twenty two supernatural tales about the old seaport of Whitby on England's beautiful and mysterious North East Coast.

Stories include tales about ghosts, vampires, the fairy folk and ancient customs and superstitions, all of which paint a suitably spectral sketch of the ghostly goings on in this famous old town over the centuries.

The origins of creatures and spectres from the imaginations of Bram Stoker and Wilkie Collins feature in this book, put together by the former Collector of Dues of Whitby Harbour, Paul McDermott. He was able to prise some spectral gems and first hand reports from the citizens and old salts he dealt with at the harbour on a day-to-day basis.

Also included is the research he carried out on some of the more ancient tales of this one time Viking, Norman and in particular, eighteenth Century ship building port, these carried out in the famous and fascinating archives of The Whitby Literary and Philosophical Society, of which he was a member.

The afterlife or life after death is a purported existence in which the essential part of their stream of consciousness or an individual's identity continues to live after the death of their physical body. The surviving essential aspect varies between belief systems; it may be some partial element, or the entire soul or spirit of an individual, which carries with it and may confer personal identity or, on the contrary, nirvana. Belief in an afterlife is in contrast to the belief in oblivion after death.

In some views, this continued existence takes place in a spiritual realm, while in others, the individual may be reborninto this world and begin the life cycle over again, likely with no memory of what they have done in the past. In this latter view, such rebirths and deaths may take place over and over again continuously until the individual gains entry to a spiritual realm or otherworld. Major views on the afterlife derive from religion, esotericism and metaphysics.
