Publisher's Summary

"Jar of Hearts grabs you by the throat! The perfect blend of riveting characters, chilling details, and gasping twists in this standout thriller will keep you frantically reading until the explosive end.” (Lisa Gardner, New York Times best-selling author of Right Behind You)

This is the story of three best friends: one who was murdered, one who went to prison, and one who's been searching for the truth all these years....

When she was 16 years old, Angela Wong - one of the most popular girls in school - disappeared without a trace. Nobody ever suspected that her best friend, Georgina Shaw, now an executive and rising star at her Seattle pharmaceutical company, was involved in any way. Certainly not Kaiser Brody, who was close with both girls back in high school.

But 14 years later, Angela Wong's remains are discovered in the woods near Geo's childhood home. And Kaiser - now a detective with Seattle PD - finally learns the truth: Angela was a victim of Calvin James. The same Calvin James who murdered at least three other women.

To the authorities, Calvin is a serial killer. But to Geo, he's something else entirely. Back in high school, Calvin was Geo's first love. Turbulent and often volatile, their relationship bordered on obsession from the moment they met right up until the night Angela was killed. For 14 years, Geo knew what happened to Angela and told no one. For 14 years, she carried the secret of Angela's death until Geo was arrested and sent to prison.

While everyone thinks they finally know the truth, there are dark secrets buried deep. And what happened that fateful night is more complex and more chilling than anyone really knows. Now the obsessive past catches up with the deadly present when new bodies begin to turn up, killed in the exact same manner as Angela Wong. How far will someone go to bury her secrets and hide her grief? How long can you get away with a lie? How long can you live with it?

I really enjoyed this read. It keeps you interested all the way through. A good story line with some twists. If you like physiological crime thrillers I recommend this book.

I really enjoyed this book

I really enjoyed this book. I figured out what was going to happen on a few of the big things just before they happed but it was still really good. I read so many of these types of books that I can't imagine being too surprised anymore. My only complaint was the end. It seemed to end a little too fast. I could have used a little more to wrap it up perfectly. I will definitely see what other books this author has to offer!

Grabs you from the beginning!

This one grabbed me from the first page and never let me go! This was a great thrill ride that kept me guessing all the way through I thought I had it figured out a few times but even in the reveal I still did not have all the details correct so it was a great surprise!

The main character in this book, Geo, is not a very likable woman but you do get to kind of understand her and why she did the things she did. This is another one of those books where I don’t want to say too much because I don’t want to ruin anyone’s initial reading!

January LaVoy’s narration was superb, every person had a voice and emotion or no emotion as the scene called for!

This book is one of the best thrillers I’ve read this year, this is my first book by this author and now I plan on checking out her other books!

Bad genetics

This takes the idea of a "bad seed" ( or bad genetics) to an extreme. Yes, the story kept my interest, despite the lack of sympathetic characters. Unfortunately, the big twist in the final quarter of the book was no surprise at all. Anyone who reads thrillers will see it coming. Is anyone else bothered by the"pass" given to Geo at the end ?
January LaVoy is always good, and the narration here is excellent as always. Too bad the story fell apart at the end.
Also, trigger warning, there is a lot of graphic sex and violence.

Peaks Too Soon

The first half of the book is a great set up for a lackluster second half. Combine that with a protagonist so flawed it's difficult to care about and you have a well written dud. Nothing like her first two books that had stellar plots and off-the-chart suspense and gotchas. This one is worth the read, but a little slow and not a huge payoff.
