Publisher's Summary

The New York Times Best Seller

Angie Martinez is the "Voice of New York". Now, for the first time, she candidly recounts the story of her rise to become an internationally celebrated hip-hop radio icon.

In her current reign at Power 105.1 and for nearly two decades at New York's Hot 97, Angie Martinez has had one of the highest rated radio shows in the country. After working her way up as an intern, she burst on the scene as a young female jock whose on-air "Battle of the Beats" segment broke records and became a platform for emerging artists like a young Jay Z. Angie quickly became known for intimate, high-profile interviews, mediating feuds between artists, and taking on the most controversial issues in hip-hop. At age 25, at the height of the East Coast/West Coast rap war, Angie was summoned by Tupac Shakur for what would be his last no-holds-barred interview - which has never aired in its entirety and which she's never discussed in detail until now.

Angie shares stories from behind the scenes of her most controversial conversations, from onetime presidential hopeful Barack Obama to superstars like Mary J. Blige and Chris Brown, and describes her emotional, bittersweet final days at Hot 97 and the highly publicized move to Power 105.1. She also opens up about her personal life - from her roots in Washington Heights and her formative years being raised by a single mom in Brooklyn to exploring the lessons that shaped her into the woman she is today.

From the Puerto Rican Day Parade to the White House, Angie is universally recognized as a powerful voice in the Latino and hip-hop communities. My Voice gives an inside look at New York City's one-of-a-kind urban radio culture, the changing faces of hip-hop music, and Angie's rise to become the Voice of New York.

GREAT book for fans of Hip-Hop

Not only is this jam packed with a ton of awesome stories and moments from Hip Hop history and culture, but the way it’s written and the way Angie reads really makes this enjoyable to listen to. As one of the most popular radio personalities EVER, Angie’s been a key player in the industry for decades. I loved hearing her story and I love her insight and humorous takes. I honestly wanna listen to it again! I would totally recommend this for people who are fans of Hip Hop, or who want to know more about its history. It’s a great read and even better audiobook!

Amazing and Inspiring

I have to say I’ve always been a huge fan of Angie Martinez but, this book just took my admiration for her to another level! As a Latina that’s always been into underground hip-hop and growing up in the golden era of hip-hop at a time when it wasn’t popular, I was always inspired by her. And all the stories she tells reveal a life lesson she’s received and nice enough to share with the world. Thanks Ang! I’m finally going to go after my dreams, that’s it you’ve pushed me!

wishing to meet Ms. Angie Martinez

this book made me love Angie Martinez even more! her humility, her vulnerability, her willingness to share... it was all well orchestrated but so tangible.
I thank her for giving us even a glimpse into her life and her as. person. I hope and have confidence that she will continue to inspire the culture and individuals as a whole.

Must Listen to All Lovers of Hip-Hop

Definitely 5/5⭐️s. I loved every moment of it. Excellent stories! Angie’s narration is flawless, conversational, it sounded as if she was telling her story without reading the book. I loved that. She even had someone narrate different personalities in the book. For instance, when talking about an interview she did with Tupac, she had someone that sounded just like Tupac read his part of the story. I was soooo good😆!

I really enjoyed all the stories she told and there were many. The Foreword is written and narrated by J. Cole. She told stories about Jay Z, Q-Tip, Diddy, The Lox, Wendy Williams (Did you know Angie once punched Wendy in the face😂), Pharrell Williams, Lil Kim, Mary J. Blige, Funk Master Flex, The Breakfast Club, Idris Elba, Biggie and the list goes on and on. It was so entertaining. A great distraction from the madness of the world today.

Listening to this book made me like and appreciate Angie even more than I did before listening to the book. I wish every audiobook was this enjoyable. It was like listening to my long lost friend telling me all about her new exciting life.

It may have taken me to years to get to this book, but I am sooo glad I didn’t bypass it. I’m sad it’s over. I want to hear more😩.

If you are into hip-hop and are looking for a great book! Do yourself a favor and check this one out. I know it’s a tad bit dated, published in 2016. But trust me the content is timeless!
