Story
Being 40 is supposed to be freaking fabulous, not fatal. Taking on a daunting new job minus the description isn’t the smartest move I’ve ever made, even if it was to save a friend. Hopefully, it doesn’t turn out to be the stupidest...or deadliest. Why can’t things stay the way they were? I love my old job. Supergluing ghosts back together and solving their issues is its own reward. Not to mention, I’m seriously good at it. Although, I must say, I’m ridiculously excited for the new Death Counselor’s arrival in nine months....

Story
Four months of wallowing in embarrassed depression should be enough. I’m beginning to realize that no one is who they seem to be, and my life story might be spinning out of my control. It’s time to take a shower, put on a bra, and wear something other than sweatpants. Difficult, but doable. With my friends - real and imaginary - by my side, I need to edit my life before the elusive darkness comes for all of us.

Vampyres don't exist. They absolutely do not exist. At least I didn't think they did 'til I tried to quit smoking and ended up Undead. Who in the hell did I screw over in a former life that my getting healthy equates with dead? Now I'm a Vampyre. Yes, we exist whether we want to or not. However, I have to admit, the perks aren't bad. My girls no longer jiggle, my ass is higher than a kite, and the latest Prada keeps finding its way to my wardrobe.

Released from the magic pokey and paroled with limited power is enough to make any witch grumpy. However, if you throw in a recently resurrected cat, a lime-green Kia, and a sexy egotistical werewolf, it's enough to make a gal fly off the edge. Not to mention a mission...with no freaking directions. So here I sit in Asscrack, West Virginia, trying to figure out how to complete my mysterious mission before All Hallows Eve when I'll get turned into a mortal.

Story
What happens when an accountant decides to grab life by the horns and try something new? Apparently a pirate named Dave, a lot of pastel fleece, and blackmail - just to start with. Visualize and succeed, Oprah said. I was sure as hell trying, even if my campaign to score a job as the local weather girl had ended in a restraining order. Okay, TV was not my strength. But a lack of talent has never stopped me before. Which is why I've embarked on a writing career. I mean, how hard can it be to come up with a sexy romance?

One day, I’m married, living in Seattle, and magic isn’t real. The next, I’m divorced and living in the guest room of my ex’s hotter-than-sin cousin’s place in Savannah and talking to an animated skeleton named Robert. I have to admit, Robert isn’t my worst date. At 41, I didn’t think I’d be starting over. But I’ll be damned if my ex thinks I’m down and out because he pulled a fast one on me. When a job comes my way that offers me a chance to use my childhood training in the shadow world, I take it.

"Happily Ever After" wasn't supposed to come with a do-over option. But when my husband of 20 years packs up and heads for greener pastures, and my son heads away to college, that's exactly what my midlife becomes. A do-over. This time, though, I plan to do things differently. Age is just a number, after all, and at 40 I'm ready to carve my own path. Eager for a fresh start, I make a somewhat unorthodox decision and move to a tiny town in the Sierra foothills.

The day after my 43rd birthday, my husband announced he was trading me in - his words, not mine. The news was unwelcome at the time, but honestly? I needed a good goosing to get up and find my way to the door. So I was freed from the giant manual of expectations authored by my ex. That was the good news. The flip side was less happy. Due to living in a state not friendly to discarded wives, I was also relieved of the financial "security" I'd spent a lifetime accruing.

Shadowvale isn’t typical small-town America. The sun never shines, the gates decide who enters, magic abounds, and every resident bears some kind of curse. No one knows this as well as raven shifter Deacon Evermore, who, like everyone in his family, has a curse. While his position as Shadowvale’s peacekeeper lets him use that curse for good, he’d rather live anywhere else. He stays for his family but doubts he can last much longer.

We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Publisher's Summary
My midlife crisis. My rules. And if it doesn’t put me six feet under, I plan to live it up in style - possibly for the rest of eternity....
After a Luke Skywalker/Darth Vader moment, I discovered I do indeed have a father. He comes with a hell of a lot of baggage, but I’ve decided to keep him. Not only do I have a father, I have a kick-ass new sister, a ghostly family, and super powers to boot. If you add to the mix that I’m dating the Grim Reaper, it’s a freakin’ party.
The only thing standing in the way of my happiness is the Angel of Mercy, though Angel of Misery is more appropriate. She’s responsible for almost everyone I have loved, and who has loved me, being taken away. With the help of family and friends, I will track her down and show her exactly what a perimenopausal hot flash looks like in action.
Job: Death counselor - supergluing ghosts back together and solving their issues is rewarding. For real.
Mission: Bring the seriously evil Angel of Mercy to justice without dying or getting anyone else killed in the process.
Team: A bunch of certifiable Immortals, including one who re-homes vibrators. Yes, you read that correctly.
How to do this? Wing it. Wine, my demon boyfriend, a houseful of deceased squatters, and good friends by my side will help.

Great book!
This book was really good! It was funny, as I always love when reading a Peterman book! It also had a few new things going on, that amped up the intensity a good bit. There was also a twist at the end that had me buying the next book and downloading it before I was even finished with this one.
As with the previous books in this series, this one is not recommended for a noisy environment, unless you don't mind missing a few whispered words and phrases .

Love this series
I’ve been reading this series as the books come out. I saw this in my Audible part of my membership to listen to so I jumped at the chance. I love the story but I had a really hard time with the narrator. She was too fast and I had to slow her down, then I hated it because any speed didn’t match the excitement of the book. Leaving it as it was, the narration was too fast that I felt anxious over the speed. I don’t know what it was about this narrator but I didn’t feel comfortable listening to it. I may just stick to reading the book. I love audiobooks and listen to many stories as I’m working out and driving. I just didn’t like this narrator. Not so much the voice, just the speed. The story was great and I can’t wait to see what happens, but I think I’ll go back to the book and leave the voices to my imagination.

I've read these books and truly enjoy them. I started listening to it and couldn't take it. The narrator reads so fast with no pauses that it is hard to follow along.

Loved it
it is starting to get a little repetitive. I can see the beginning of each book the first chapter going over what happened, but it repeats a lot throughout the whole book! I still love the characters and the story is pretty good but a little less repetition would be perfect! the narrator is terrific!

Couldn't even finish this one...
If you've made it this far in the series, you know the books become less well-written, not better.... which doesn't even make sense to me - unless they were all written as one big book, then split apart. An author generally gets better with each book... but not here!
Yeah... don't do it - you can't get back the time you'll waste. 🤷🏻♀️

Amazingly awesome series!
For a book in my plus catalogue, this has been one of the best stories I've listened to in a good long while. Characters well developed, lots of lol moments, narrator is kick ass. can't rate it highly enough! Also I have to say a lot 9f really good books get ruined by having them try to be exotic in nature this book doesn't attempt it which is actually a breath of fresh air that it's not about a woman who's hung up on some unattainable male. Loving it so far.
