Story
When Monty Don's golden retriever, Nigel, became the surprise star of BBC's Gardeners' World, inspiring huge interest, fan mail and even his own social media accounts, Monty Don wanted to explore what makes us connect with animals quite so deeply. In many respects Nigel is a very ordinary dog - charming, handsome and obedient, as so many are. He is also a much loved family pet. He is also a star. By telling Nigel's story, Monty relates his relationships with other special dogs in his life in a memoir of his dogs past and very much present.

Story
As a boy, James Rebanks's grandfather taught him to work the land the old way. Their family farm in England's Lake District hills was part of an ancient agricultural landscape: a patchwork of crops and meadows, of pastures grazed with livestock, and hedgerows teeming with wildlife. And yet, by the time James inherited the farm, it was barely recognizable. The men and women had vanished from the fields; the old stone barns had crumbled; the skies had emptied of birds and their wind-blown song.

From lavish palace for Elizabethan nobles to dreary jailhouse for 18th-century prisoners of war, from well-manicured country house for a string of landed families to weed-choked ruin, Sissinghurst, in Kent, has become one of the most illustrious estates in England - and its future may prove to be just as intriguing as its past. At the same time it keeps us in touch with the earth, the seasons, and with that complex of interrelated forces both animate and inanimate which we call nature. It is a humanising occupation."

When we think of fungi, we likely think of mushrooms. But mushrooms are only fruiting bodies, analogous to apples on a tree. Fungi provide a key to understanding the planet on which we live, and the ways we think, feel, and behave.

Of all the things humans rely on plants for - sustenance, beauty, medicine, fragrance, flavor, fiber - surely the most curious is our use of them to change consciousness: to stimulate or calm, fiddle with or completely alter, the qualities of our mental experience. Take coffee and tea: People around the world rely on caffeine to sharpen their minds. But we do not usually think of caffeine as a drug, or our daily use as an addiction, because it is legal and socially acceptable.

Publisher's Summary
From a very early age, I loved the countryside as much as any garden and was fascinated by the life that I saw all around me from trees, wildflowers, birds, insects and mammals. In a sense, this book has been over 60 years in gestation. I have kept notebooks and journals ever since I could write, and I have drawn upon these as well as the events of the past year.
A year at home in the country with Monty Don - the UK's favourite gardener, dog owner, writer and broadcaster - on a personal journey through the natural year, season by season, month by month.
My Garden World by Monty Don is a celebration of every living creature that we all share. This year has given us the enforced opportunity to learn more about the fascinating natural world around us. Whether you live in the countryside or the town, Monty's observations and insights are relevant to each and every one of us. My Garden World is Monty Don's personal journey through the natural year, month by month, season by season, observed from the immediate world around him.
Wildlife is not something that we watch happening in remote and exotic parts of the world on our screens, but right here in our own back yards, and the more that we encourage it and learn to live with it, the more rewarding it becomes. If, in our own modest back yards, we can help preserve and treasure our natural world then we will make the world a better place - not just for ourselves but for every living creature.

This has a new twist
while you are still in Monty's garden, the focus this time is not the flowers or vegetables. Instead, center stage are the animals, birds and reptiles that have shared his garden through the decades. Typical Monty fashion, he brings them to life, so that we may smile to as we listen to him recount his memories. Highly recommend, but don't get if you are looking for a gardening "how to" book. This is not that.

Monty Don is a Treasure
Icons of wholesomeness are not common but I'm putting Monty Don up there with Steve Irwin, LeVar Burton and Bob Ross. I love the wonderment with which he approaches every subject. I have all of his books and I will play them over and over just to have his soothing voice musing about all the details of nature. I like his book "Nigel: My Family and Other Dogs" the best for the biographical elements but this one is also nice to have in the background while I'm working and I can dip in and out and hear something new about the wildlife specific to his home in the English Countryside.

A glimmer of light in this, our troubled lives.
An informative and thought provoking book full of feelings which mirrored my own. It compelled me to look up many of the flora and fauna to check out for myself which plants and creatures I recognised from my own garden and bird table. Having had to say goodby to my own constant companion, the loss of Nigel resonated with me too. If you love the breeze in your face, the frost on your spade and the warmth that it brings to your heart then this book is a must. Thank you Monty.

A list not a story
I really like Monty Don’s work and admire what he stands for; however this is a list not an integrated account and would work better as a reference book to dip into. The book is arranged according to seasons which is fine and logical, but in each section he merely offers a sequence of short, unrelated commentaries on different things relevant to the season (thus for January — snowdrops, sparrows, foxes, etc). It come across (to me at least) as some interesting information in an oddly disjointed form. It could have been so much better since he’s clearly an engaging writer and speaker.
