Story
Army veteran Lee Riker is staying in an Atlanta shelter and supporting himself with the odd carpentry job when his sister, Tara, summons him home to Indiana for the reading of their mother’s will. Riker boards a Greyhound bus in Atlanta with his duffel bag, less than $200 to his name, and a secret he must protect at all costs. Riker makes it to Middletown only to learn his sister has recently witnessed a gruesome death. Insisting she saw the victim rise from a pool of his own blood to attack the Samaritan rendering aid, Tara floats the idea that the man may have been a zombie.

Publisher's Summary
A mysterious outbreak has spread quickly, ravaging the globe. The illness is debilitating and deadly. Those who suffer from the virus succumb to a horrible death. Unfortunately, it doesn't end there. The infection transforms them into an unstoppable force of mindless killing machines.
At the onset of the epidemic, Nila Carter and her family retreated to her father's cabin in search of safety and seclusion from all that transpired around them. With supplies, fresh water and fertile ground, they were joined by a handful of strangers and positioned themselves for long-term survival.
Despite the losses that each of them suffered, they resolve to stay put and emotionally move forward no matter how long it takes. However, their plan to homestead at the cabin is cut short when they soon realize the world isn't quite as dead as they believed. The infected aren't the only thing to fear.

I’m glad I disregarded other reviews
There was another review for this book that was very condescending toward the author and narrator. Since I enjoyed the first book, I decided to give the second book a try. I’m glad I did. I don’t know why they had such an issue. The narrator did a great job. The different tones of voice to reflect a male narrative was well done. I love and hate that people get killed off that are liked. It makes for a more realistic story, as not everyone would be likely to live through a zombie apocalypse. I have over 800 books in my audible library, most are zombie books. I have heard some horrible books, this is not one.

Ughhhh that narrator!!
The first book in this series was awesome. Story, plot, narration..all good. Characters are a little thin but I can deal with that. Didn’t notice book 2 and 3 had a different narrator.....that choppy, robotic voice drives me insane and totally takes away from a good story. It’s not constant and that makes it more annoying.

Better Than Other Druga Books
Most of Druga’s books are hit or miss. This one is better than most of her other books. Still the characters are hard to relate to with unrealistic dialogue and a narrator that reads slow...each word a triumph.
So, I recommend this book only if you like this author. If you don’t there are plenty of selections in this genre to get your dystopian fix.

I can’t with her voice
This could’ve been a good story if they had used the same woman from the first book. But they didn’t. She sounds so god awful. It’s like listening to a robot. I can’t even focus on the story it’s so annoying. Don’t waste your time with it.

The narrator is killing me!
I absolutely LOVED the first book and was excited to see there were 2 others. The narrator in the first book killed it. However, this narrator is different from the first and she tends to be very robotic with zero emotion or separation in voices for characters. If I wasn't so attached to the first book I'm not sure I'd be able to finish this one. It's so distracting.

The narration is ruining the story.
The first book was better and the narration was okay because the narrator was doing only one person's voice in First-Person. Now, the author has decided to have two characters in First-Person; one female and one male. But, she reads both with the same voice and there is no indication of the change. So, it takes you a few paragraphs to figure out who is talking.

Good story for the second book. Struggled with the reader.
I liked the story it was relatable and made sense. The part that made me want to throw my phone was the reader. She over enunciated every word. I think she tried to give Lev an accent by enunciating each word but she did it with everyone. She over stresses her enunciation as well and I really hated it. He person who read book one did better. If they were the same person whoever had her change her methods for reading was wrong. I recommend the book still just be prepared.

better than expected
Funny enough, when submitted a review for the first book I was not aware of a second. I was thrilled to see there was a 2nd.
I live how it took immediately off from ending of the first book. Lots more action and unexpected sadness. questions were answered and decisions for a better future.
I already have book 3 download and ready to listen. My only complaint is the last 2 books are only 5 hours long. For the cost it should be longer .

Mixed feelings
After having really enjoyed the first book I felt compelled to carry on with the series. However this book fell far short of the first. I loved some of the new characters especially Corbin but felt that that he wasn't utilised as much as he could have been. Nila is a bit annoying and a bit on the stupid side but then that makes her believable so it works.. There where some good twists in this book but something for me fell flat. I just felt that the depth of characters and storyline could have been so much more but it just wasn't. I will hopefully find the third book more like the first. I like the narrator.

Annoying main character gets more annoying
Nila really is difficult for me. She is the bad kind of stupid that will get everyone killed in an emergency. And then the Lev "bleeding heart" moment frustrated me even more.

Appreciated the jeopardy
such a refreshing change to find an author with the guts to kill off main characters when the story calls for it. Too many follow the old Star Trek concept of the newbie in the away party is a gonner. Enjoyed all 3 of these books because you really couldn't predict who was next for the chop.

Really enjoying this take on an apocalypse, unfortunately this second book is narrated robotically. It’s strange as some sentences are read fluently then it sounds like a robots taken over, makes it quite a difficult listen but still worth trying to get over that as the storylines fab.

If your expecting an experience like book 1 turn
Turn away! The first book was amazing. There is a separation with how the characters act in the first book from the second book and the narrator is so disjointed in retelling the story.
Tricia below nails it - if I wasn't so invested in the story I couldn't have gotten through this and I'm really hoping book 3 isn't like this. I just can't get over how dumb she suddenly makes Lev mid way through the book and some of the back story is so freakng weird
