Samuel Chamberlain's My Confession is a quintessential American tale of a young man's unbridled escapades across the vastness of the Western Frontier. From humble beginnings in Boston, Chamberlain journeyed to Texas to fight in the Mexican-American War and eventually fell in with the notorious Glanton Gang, a brutal group of scalp-hunters immortalized in Cormac McCarthy's Western masterpiece Blood Meridian.

Within this audiobook, Chamberlain leaves no stone unturned, providing an immersive account of the Mexican War, the unyielding men who fought in it, and a sobering portrait of the lawlessness of the American frontier.

I have to wonder why the book ended so suddenly. Did he ever get to avenge his wife and murder the man who took her? I have so many questions

An Abrupt Ending

This epic account brings to the fore many questions of man’s nature, and just as subtly gives its answers. It is darkly humorous, having me laugh from the gut and again laugh in nervous incredulity at the inhumanity of man. The narration captures the tone well, but the reading suffers from repeated mispronunciations.

Brutal, epic, and darkly humorous

if you came to this book for a more historical account of Cormac McCarthy's blood meridian you are not going to find much here. The section involving the glanton gang is at the very end of this book, and cuts off quite abruptly. at times this book was very dry, but I never felt that it was too ridiculous to be false, and I enjoyed it.

it's history baby

Even if the protagonist is ultimately a ne’er-do-well 👍 the only problem is minimum word counts for reviews.

Such a great work of art*

Go to the last hour of the audio book to learn about the inspiration for Blood Meridian.

Narrator was great, though I wish he had learned to correctly pronounce Spanish.
