Cold brew, summer crowds… and a dead developer.
Maplewood’s annual Cold Brew Crawl is supposed to be good for business at Brewed Awakenings. Instead, barista Hattie Calder watches the town’s most disliked developer collapse after grabbing the wrong tasting cup.
Within minutes, Brent Sleedy is dead.
Most of Maplewood already has a suspect. The activist who fought his construction projects. The banker furious over missing money. The carpenter with a temper and a public grudge.
But Hattie saw something no one else noticed.
With her sister Sam, tech-minded friend Liam, and Beans—the café’s completely unqualified detective cat—Hattie starts pulling at threads the police are ignoring. Gossip spreads, alibis crack, and every answer leads to another lie.
Because someone in Maplewood planned the perfect murder… hidden inside the chaos of a coffee festival.
And if Hattie gets one detail wrong, the person who poisoned Brent Sleedy won’t just escape justice.
They’ll make sure the next cup is meant for her.

The story is filled with lighthearted banter and a few chuckles, making it a classic, cozy mystery that wraps up without a cliffhanger. While the plot shifts midway when Hattie identifies the killer and focuses on gathering evidence with Wyatt, the overall experience is charming. The narration was provided by a virtual voice; while it was clear enough to keep me curious about the murderer's identity, it didn't quite draw me in as much as a human performance might have. It is an enjoyable, bite-sized mystery, though I personally would have enjoyed more focus on the investigative side of the story.
