Captivating!

The twists keep on coming as Frank Amato peels away the layers of a bribery scheme to find the murderer of an IRS agent. He keeps you riveted through twists, turns and intrigues. A definite must read.

This gripping mystery and suspense thriller is full of mystery and suspense, plot twists and surprises. or books with hard-boiled mystery thriller suspense & action, you will not be able to put this down & the end will have you begging for more.

Surprisingly excellent

Murder 1040: The Final Audit by Fred Lichtennberg was a good read. Frank Amato is a retiring IRS manager who is brought back to a time he wanted to forget. When he went home he reread his manuscript he never published. This manuscript was based on his life and the pain he has been through.

Not a dry accountant story

I never thought I would root for the IRS but the author created such a suspenseful story with fascinating - and at times juvenile- characters and plot twists that I couldn't stop hoping that Amado would have a happy retirement.

Though I received this book as a gift from the author I submit this unbiased review and hope to be able to purchase more from him in the future... the epilogue does provide this possibility:)

A very original story. A twisted plot and solid character. Suspenseful and unexpected. An audit of oneself is hopefully less exciting as his, though for the book it was a great time. I was voluntarily provided this review copy audiobook at no charge by the author, narrator, and/or publisher.

The tax man cometh
Frank Amato is a retiring IRS Agent who we find out is an unlikely but diligent hero of this South Florida mystery. When he receives a letter on his last day of work before retiring. This letter revives old memories and then he reopens an old manuscript, one he thought he had put away for good. The manuscript tells the story of a mystery in his past.
It is not often that we see an IRS official as a hero and to some degree he may be the only good agent in his office.
The is an entertaining/intriguing mystery that lays out the story somewhat the old Dragnet series. “Just the facts ma’am”. Well worth the listen.

"A lotta sick people out there, cousin."

On the day of his retirement as head of the Palm Beach office of the IRS, Frank Amato receives a package containing a letter and an old journal of his dating back to 1995. He had just taken over at the office, following the sudden retirement of Williams, his predecessor. One of the agents there had recently been murdered. Unwilling to sit back and do nothing, Frank looks into the cases which the murdered agent had been investigating and, in so doing, finds discrepances​ and possible bribes being taken. But by whom? Working with a police detective, they both get drawn into a conspiracy beyond mere tax evasion and corruption. And Frank slowly falls in love.

Written in a noir style, this thrilling book is constantly changing direction as increasing numbers of people come under suspicion both of the original murders (there is another, besides the IRS agent, shot almost at the same time by the same gun) and of further deaths as well as financial improprieties and allegations of bribe making and taking, quickly rising into higher levels of society. It is complex, twisting and turning, and throughout it all Frank is severely tested in his intention to bring the wrongdoers to justice.

The book is characterised by short, snappy sentences within short chapters. Fred Filbrich has the perfect voice for this story, rich and quite deep, with steady pace, slick and quick and no unecessary inflection, as befits this type of prose. His character voicings do not have major delimitation but it is always clear who is speaking. One irritation, however, is a faint clicking in the background like metallic paper being crumples or tiny beads running spasmodically over a metal dish. Only audible when the volume is high, this continuing background accompaniment, once heard is hard to ignore and can be distracting.

I received my copy of Murder 1040: the Final Audit, as a gift from the rights holder, via Audiobook Boom. My thanks for that. I enjoyed it very much and was absorbed into it totally for much of the time, not knowing where it would lead next. Because it is quite long and complex in plot, with a number of protagonists for the reader to follow, I would have liked to have also had a written copy of the text in which I could refer back to earlier passages - not essential but handy if the book cannot be heard in a fairly concentrated listen. But a well grafted and involving book which should appeal to anyone who enjoys complex investigative thrillers.
