Publisher's Summary

In a modern and twisty retelling of Jane Eyre, a young woman must question everything she thinks she knows about love, loyalty, and murder.

Jane has lost everything: job, mother, relationship, even her home. A friend calls to offer an unusual deal—a cottage above the crashing surf of Big Sur on the estate of his employer, Evan Rochester. In return, Jane will tutor his teenage daughter. She accepts.

But nothing is quite as it seems at the Rochester estate. Though he’s been accused of murdering his glamorous and troubled wife, Evan Rochester insists she drowned herself. Jane is skeptical, but she still finds herself falling for the brilliant and secretive entrepreneur and growing close to his daughter.

And yet her deepening feelings for Evan can’t disguise dark suspicions aroused when a ghostly presence repeatedly appears in the night’s mist and fog. Jane embarks on an intense search for answers and uncovers evidence that soon puts Evan’s innocence into question. She’s determined to discover what really happened that fateful night, but what will the truth cost her?

Critic Reviews

“[Eva] Kaminsky, as Jane, sounds young, savvy, and appropriately consumed by the mystery surrounding Beatrice's disappearance.… As Beatrice, [Carly] Robins sounds truly deranged, especially during her psychotic episodes and horrific self-mutilations. Despite cell phones, motorcycles, and computers, this contemporary Gothic works, thanks to clever writing and two exceptionally talented narrators.”AudioFile Magazine

“A modern American Jane Eyre…Marcott’s reworking of this Gothic classic holds its own.”Kirkus Reviews

“This imaginative take on Charlotte Bronte’s Gothic novel has several satisfying nods to the source material, but veers away just enough to create a refreshing new experience. Marcott’s Jane is a formidable protagonist…Fans of Jane Eyre who enjoyed Rachel Hawkins’s The Wife Upstairs will appreciate this equally enjoyable retelling from Marcott.”Library Journal (starred review)

Great story*

I wasn't to sure in the beginning. The narration was so cynical at first. I stuck with it and it seemed to get better. The story is so good that I'm sure glad I did! Great romantic mystery. Fabulous way the whole thing wraps up in the end!

Unexpected trip to mistrust and insanity

This book although a best seller list was a difficult read as it went from scenes of insanity and macabre to mistrust and doubt.

Solid Story

At times I felt the narration took away from the story, but overall it was very good. And, the story delivered as promised -- a mystery filled with twists and turns, with a dose of romance. The author did a great job. The semblance to Jane Eyre was undeniable.

Narrator Needs Guidance/Coaching

Loved the book but the cadence of the narrator’s voice was difficult to listen to. It had this sing sing up down qual to it.

Disappointing, Hard to listen to the narration

I listened to the entire book thinking it would get better but it didn’t, and then it was over. I can’t say I liked it. I would not recommend this title.

Narrator ruined it

Carly Robins, has pronunciation problem leaving out g in all "ing". I can't stand her. The other narrator was pretty good but still couldn't finish it.

Dreadful

This was so badly written and narrated that I want to make sure I never read another book by this author, or narrator, ever.

Terrific

Well narrated. At times a bit over the top and I couldn’t believe anyone could be so perfect. Still I really loved it and waited for it to be too silly but it wasn’t.
Well done.
