It is 1896. Mrs. Hudson and her colleagues are traveling to Athens to attend the first Olympiad in more than 2000 years. Indeed, Holmes is to participate in the foils competition as a member of Great Britain's Olympic team. But the trip is more than just fun and games. The three members of London's first and foremost consulting detective agency are, in fact, engaged in a delicate bit of undercover work on behalf of Queen and country. They are to secure a letter being sent by courier to Queen Victoria from her daughter, the Dowager Empress of Germany. Peace between the two nations may well depend on the contents of that letter. They arrive to find both the courier and the wife of the British Ambassador shot dead in the Ambassador's residence. The letter and the Ambassador are nowhere to be found. They discover, too, that Inspector Lestrade is already in Athens investigating the sale of fake antiquities to the wife of the Ambassador. The Baker Street trio has the ten days of the Olympiad to recover the critical letter, capture a double murderer, and uncover the secret behind the scheme to pass off copies of Greek antiquities as genuine--all while Holmes seeks to dispatch his fencing competition and win an Olympic medal.

Very clever take on Sherlock.

I really enjoyed this story with Mrs. Hudson as the brains behind Holmes' success. I think it was very well done, and researched extensively. I hope the rest of the series will be available on audio, as I believe this is the fifth in the series, and it is the first one I have listened to.

Narrators poor education and ignorance ruined it for me

This dude is supposed to be a professional narrator and yet he doesn’t know the word “faux”!? That’s not even the WORST of offenses. Let’s see “cornices”, “kaiser”, “read” (present tense), “read” (past tense)…. I gather those are the only ones I can think of. My brain has blocked out the rest as traumatic experiences.

Honestly wtf?! I’m guessing it all starts with a sub grade-level education and ends with mere ignorance to the world around him which happens to exist in any sphere above the most basic instinct level.

VIRTUAL VOICE did a better job of it!!!! And that’s saying a LOT. Someone from one of these companies needs to contact me. I’m retired. I have the time. I love to read and I’ll do a much better job than many others… if this guy is any guage of the level of skill needed.

Of course you’ve got the David Frederick Case’s, the Dick Hill’s, the Patrick Tull’s… even Scott Brick whom I can’t stand is at least an honest to god professional… you’ve got these guys to whom I don’t suggest I can hold a candle. But this Johnny Robinson or whatever? He’s literally butchering perfectly good artwork here. A travesty. A real crime.

Omg my man just said “courteous” instead of what I imagine must have been “circuitous”! Then; “Refuse” as in: to reply in the negative, where clearly b warranted was “Refuse” as in: waste.

My head is just about ready to explode.

Watson: “we understand that you are a friend of Ms Karasulis”
Narrator: “spoken as a question to assist the listener’s lack of English comprehension”.

Yet he actually pronounced it like a statement! My gosh. I can’t do it. I’m officially giving up. This narrator has now destroyed what could have been a nice listen. Definitely a good novel but if you are a veteran audiophile, or simply have a firm grasp on the English language, skip it. Your blood pressure will benefit.

Investigative Trio!

Who knew that Mrs. Hudson was the brains behind the World’s first Consulting Detective! She is seemingly dismissed and disregarded by the chauvinists, but this clever story shows Mrs Hudson has a powerful brain and unmatched deductive skills. A lot of humor, history and a bit of matchmaking. The narration was excellent!
