Hoary Hawthorne not bad

This large collection of short stories (26) is thick with allegory, and implied or explicit supernatural elements. They were mostly enjoyable, though Hawthorne’s cynicism and philosophizing made it a grind at times. Also, reading them one right after the other reveals many of them have a similar plot structure that amounts to a moralizing litany of symbols, and historic or fictional figures. I liked his phrasing, imagination, and appreciation of nature.
