Publisher's Summary

"Although the scythe isn't pre-eminent among the weapons of war, anyone who has been on the wrong end of, say, a peasants' revolt will know that in skilled hands it is fearsome."

For Mort however, it is about to become one of the tools of his trade. Henceforth, Death is no longer going to be the end, merely the means to an end. He has received an offer he can't refuse. As Death's apprentice, he'll have free board and use of the company horse. And being dead isn't compulsory. It's a dream job - until he discovers that it can be a love-life killer.

there is no justice

I love this book, short but sweet.
narrator did a mostly good job, but I'd say the voice he used for death was a little to over the top for me.

Didn't realise this was the abridged version

Not realising it was the shortened version is my own fault of course but it meant that I feel like I wasted a credit. I was interested to hear Tony Robinson reading this book (as opposed to Nigel Planer who has done the others I've listened to), and I like the quirkiness but Death isn't booming enough for my liking. I like the portrayal of Mort though.

Mort

This is one of my favourite Terry Pratchett books. Tony Robinson’s narration is brilliant, recording not the best quality. Death getting drunk? Who’d have thought it.

Pressed for time? Great. But I'd pick unabridged

Excellent narration by Robinson & originally an excellent book. But abridged within an inch of its life to the point where half the appeal is lost.

Timeless

A story as good today as it was twenty years ago... and they only get better as the series goes on.

Brilliant as ever

Really enjoyed this title in spite of it being abridged. Tony Robinson is the voice of the Discworld for me.

Surprising amount of swearing - Parents beware!

Every now-and-again I revolt against the number of children's books we have in the car and pick something random I want to listen too. I'd read this book years ago and (my kids love fantasy and halloweeny stuff) just assumed it would be suitable. Pah! I thought. It's not labelled for Terry Pratchett Kids, but I know them. It will be fine.

Well, the story was. My two (ages 6 and 8) thought the idea of Death wanting time off, was astounding. They marveled at the description of a completely black garden, with plants, trees etc all different colours of black. They thrilled at a world where two realities could live simultaneously and fight it out for a winner. I however cringed at the "Bl**dy" swearing that I had (a) either forgotten or (b) this edited version made more obvious.

Hmm. Great audiobook. Bear in mind the swearing when playing to kids.
