Story
From her first moment at Merryweather High, Melinda Sordino knows she's an outcast. She busted an end-of-summer party by calling the cops, a major infraction in high-school society, so her old friends won't talk to her, and people she doesn't know glare at her. She retreats into her head, where the lies and hypocrisies of high school stand in stark relief to her own silence, making her all the more mute.

No crying. No snitching. Revenge. That's where Will's now heading, with that gun shoved in the back waistband of his jeans, the gun that was his brother's gun. Story
Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name.

Harriet Tubman: Conductor on the Underground Railroad was praised by the New Yorker as “an evocative portrait,” and by the Chicago Tribune as “superb.” It is a gripping and accessible portrait of the heroic woman who guided more than 300 slaves to freedom and who is expected to be the face of the new $20 bill. Harriet Tubman was born a slave and dreamed of being free. She was willing to risk everything - including her own life - to see that dream come true. Publisher's Summary
FADE IN: INTERIOR COURT. A guard sits at a desk behind STEVE. KATHY O'BRIEN, STEVE's lawyer, is all business as she talks to STEVE.
O'BRIEN
Let me make sure you understand what's going on. Both you and this King character are on trial for felony murder. Felony murder is as serious as it gets....When you're in court, you sit there and pay attention. You let the jury know that you think the case is as serious as they do....
STEVE
You think we're going to win?
O'BRIEN (seriously)
It probably depends on what you mean by "win".
Critic Reviews
"Steve Harmon, 16, is accused of serving as a lookout for a robbery of a Harlem drugstore. The owner was shot and killed, and now Steve is in prison awaiting trial for murder. From there, he tells about his case and his incarceration. Many elements of this story are familiar, but Myers keeps it fresh and alive by telling it from an unusual perspective. Steve, an amateur filmmaker, recounts his experiences in the form of a movie screenplay. His striking scene-by-scene narrative of how his life has dramatically changed is riveting....It's an emotionally charged story that readers will find compelling and disturbing." (School Library Journal)

A wonderful book -- weak audio cast
This book is amazing. I am currently reading it with my grade 8 class and everyone loves it. HOWEVER the voices on this audio book were disappointing. The main character's voice was fine, but the other characters sound stiff and artificial--like the script was read with an audience of second language learners in mind.

Dramatic yet Intriguing
I struggled to read this book since it was assigned for summer but it actually better than I thought it was. Reading with the audio make it a hundred times better than reading itself. Narators bring out the story and make it sound like a movie. This book gives you a taste of what is happening in our society and how the jury can sometimes be broken because of bias. I recommend the book to all.

This audiobook is awesome! It does justice to Walter Dean Myers's Monster and the unique writing style and structure of the book. I taught the book in a 7th grade ELA classroom and it really helped students visualize the characters and helped clarify the plot movement! Wonderfully done!
