Sanyika Shakur
Acerca de esta escucha
The follow-up to his best-selling memoir Monster, Sanyika Shakur's T.H.U.G. L.I.F.E. is a vicious, heart-wrenching, and true-to-life novel about an LA gang member that masterfully captures the violence and depravity of gang life.
Shakur's protagonist is Lapeace, the leader of the Eight Tray Crips gang in South Central Los Angeles. In a deadly gunfight with Anyhow, a Blood and Lapeace's rival since childhood, eight innocent civilians are killed. Anyhow is captured. Lapeace becomes a fugitive and he must hide out in the home of his girlfriend Tashima, a hip-hop mogul, as a pair of crooked LA detectives, John Sweeney and Jesse Mendoza, attempt to track him down.
This novel was written from the confines of Shakur's jail cell, and the authenticity of its street scenes - the relentlessness of violence, the do-or-die attitude of each side of the gang war, the sheer joy in the killing - is a testament to the hell that has been a majority of Shakur's life.
With T.H.U.G. L.I.F.E., Shakur delivers a powerful and gripping story about the terror of gang life and one man's attempt to free himself.

Historia
When his Los Angeles neighborhood was threatened by gangbangers, Stanley Tookie Williams and a friend formed the Crips, but what began as protection became worse than the original gangs. From deadly street fights with their rivals to drive-by shootings and stealing cars, the Crips' influence—and Tookie's reputation—began to spread across Los Angeles. Soon he was regularly under police surveillance, and, as a result, was arrested often, though always released because the charges did not stick.

In 2013 Assata Shakur, founding member of the Black Liberation Army, former Black Panther and godmother of Tupac Shakur, became the first ever woman to make the FBI's most wanted list. Assata Shakur's trial and conviction for the murder of a white State Trooper in the spring of 1973 divided America. Her case quickly became emblematic of race relations and police brutality in the USA. While Assata's detractors continue to label her a ruthless killer, her defenders cite her as the victim of a systematic, racist campaign.

Fat Joe is a hip-hop legend, but this is not a tale of celebrity; it is the story of Joseph Cartagena, a kid who came of age in the South Bronx during its darkest years of drugs, violence, and abandonment, and how he navigated that traumatizing landscape until he found—through art, friendship, luck, and will—a rocky path to a different life. This memoir, written in Joe’s own intensely compelling voice, moves with the momentum of pulp fiction, but underneath the tragicomedy and riveting tales of the streets and the industry is a thought-provoking story about a generation of survivors.

For 20 years, gang unit detectives Tim Brennan and Robert Ladd patrolled the streets of Compton. They witnessed the birth and rise of gangsta rap with acts they knew personally, such as N.W.A and D.J. Quik; dealt firsthand with the chaos of the L.A. riots, its aftermath, and the gang truce that followed; were involved in the investigations of the murders of hip-hop stars Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G., and were major players in an all-out tug-of-war with City Hall that ultimately resulted in the permanent shut-down of the Compton Police Department.

His real name was Earl Simmons. As a child, he placed higher on tests than his fellow students and liked to spend mornings with his mother and sisters playing games and making pancakes. But for young Earl - a boy growing up on the streets of Yonkers, New York - that kind of childhood didn’t last long. Beatings, abuse, and neglect very soon had him moving on to other things, like robbing, stealing, drugs, and, eventually, jail. Along the way, however, he found a talent and a passion for rhyme.

Historia
Continuously available in print since 1968, this novel has become embedded in progressive anti-racist culture with wide circulation of the book and hotly debated film. A literary classic, The Spook Who Sat by the Door is a strong comment on entrenched racial inequities in the United States in the late 1960s. With its focus on the “militancy” that characterized the Black Power movement of the 1960s and 1970s, this is the story of one man’s reaction to ruling-class hypocrisy.

The author didn't disappoint me!
Having read the author's biography back in 93', I was instantly interested in this title! I am again intrigued by the author's ability to beautifully illustrate pain and chaos and make you think you're part of the story you get so immersed! It would be great if Audible also carried his biography "Monster :Autobiography of an LA Gang member" *wink wink*

Not good. Lame
It’s sad that Sanyika wrote this book. Was Monster co-written with another author? This book feels like a 6th-grader’s mastabatory dream. Grown men that blast a different song that coincides with his ever changing mood, over descriptive sex scenes, cliché characters... I don’t know, this is bad like Ice Berg Slim’s later books were. Unfortunate. I didn’t finish this book, it was too sad.
