Publisher's summary

It takes a survivor to know a madman. When the police need to crawl inside the mind of a monster, they call Caroline.

As a child, Caroline was abducted along with her twin sister. For over a year, their captor forced them to play his sick games, using their hunger to test the lengths they’d go to survive.

Caroline escaped. Her sister didn’t.

Now a young woman gnawed by survivor’s guilt, Caroline’s horrific past has left her with a unique gift to understand the twisted motivations of serial killers. She couldn’t save her sister-but she can at least help the police keep other girls safe.

But there’s something different about her latest case.

Something familiar.

Teenage girls are being murdered, their organs removed. As the scope of horror widens, Caroline begins to experience blackouts of lost time and disturbing hallucinations that are leading her to one terrible, impossible conclusion.

Caroline is a keeper of secrets. She knows her captor can’t be responsible.

Yet a message is being sent...a buried echo resurfacing...a personal connection of a dark and dangerous appetite.

3books aweek girl

So I’m a domestic engineer ( yes ) with 2 toddlers and a tween boy and a 4th one named husband. besides music , it’s audible books and this one sooo far has the only one that had my full attention. I didn’t drift or set it aside. My ear bud didn’t leave my ear from morning till dinner. So worth the credit. Need more

Narrator is horrible.

Ok, story was interesting. It had some slow spots but kept my interest, not the best I've read and not the worst. However, Susan Marlowe is one narrator I will never listen to again. In this book she is supposed to have a southern accent that comes and goes throughout. My biggest problem is her pronunciation of words with a double t. The word "written" is pronounced writ-ten NOT wri-hen as Ms. Marlowe thinks. She did this throughout the book never pronouncing the t's correctly, it drove me nuts.

wow!

I wanted to stop reading two chapters in, but i was curious to see just how much this author had stolen from the tv series hannibal I got my answer. all of it! the entire plotline. the ending is the only thing she came up with herself.

Painful

I’m typically very forgiving but this book pushed my limits, I LOVE true crime but this felt salacious and the narrator was wrong for the story. I couldn’t distinguish the dream sequences from reality, call me dumb but I just didn’t get it.

No thanks

This book did not capture my attention. It was so dull my mind wandered while listening, but it didn't matter. Ten hours I'll never get back.

Captivating

Wow, this book is amazing!! Sick and twisted, and truly a story that will keep you thinking,
Caroline endured something no human should have to endure. She not only survived, but has the ability to think like a serial killer. This makes her the perfect profiler.

This is the first physiological thriller I have listened to, and it is awesome. The narrator did an amazing job with the voices. I really enjoyed this story!

It's pronounced 'buh tn' not 'buh-en'

Unlike other reviewers, I didn't mind the narrator droppin' the g while she's readin' the book; the story takes place in the south so no biggie. I do very much mind the lazy and annoying pronunciation of "cer-en" words like "written." Dear Miss Marlowe, the T is not silent and thus we don't say "wri--en" or "frigh--end." I might have thought it was all part of the southern patois but the title page was read this way also.

As for the story, I don't mind gruesome but this one tried too hard to shock. Also, the narrative swung so madly between the present, past, and hallucinations that I felt a little whiplashed. Kind of wish I'd returned it but it kept me somewhat entertained while gardening.

Too convoluted

Listening to this book was like eating a dinner that your friend that can't cook made...you got through it okay but it just didn't leave you satisfied. This book is line 20 other books I've read this year.... maybe next I'll try non fiction

I'm Amazed The Authur got away with it!

If you're a fan of the TV series Hannibal, you'll be utterly amazed at the parallel of this story and the one of serial killers daughter Abigail Hobbs with Dr. Lecter. if you are not familiar with that story then you might enjoy this but I was open mouthed with amazement all the way through with this blatant copy.

Rollercoaster

Format: audiobook
Narrator: Susan Marlowe

Wow what a phenomenal roller coaster of a thriller, some dark and twisted events occur throughout this story but I couldn’t put it down.

The horrors that Caroline survived give her a unique insight into serial killers but how much of that darkness has taken root inside her? And just what is she capable of!
This story grabs you from the start and doesn’t let go, I’ll be seeing what else this author has written, a well deserved 5 stars.

The narrator does a fantastic job portraying the characters but especially with Caroline and all the issues she’s working through.

Graphic, disturbing, gripping...

I bought this as an audiobook; the narration was largely fine but it was sometimes tricky to follow due to the jumping to and fro from present time to flashbacks, etc.

This book is very gripping - and it’s definitely immersive - however it is also horrifically graphic, to the extent where I’d occasionally have to pause it and come back to it at another time.

There should be quite a few trigger warnings; there are really violent, gruesome and downright creepy descriptions of awful acts, including numerous accounts of child abuse.

However - very twisty, shocking and all ties up very well at the end. I had my suspicions Re the ending early-middle of the story, though the twists make you forget about them and youre back to square one. None of the characters are particularly personable or likeable but I suppose that’s the point!

Overall, I’d recommend this book to anyone who’s actively wanting a VERY dark, twisted psychological thriller, but be warned as the content has made my stomach turn a few times...

Monster

This psychological thriller grabbed my attention from the very beginning and kept me on the edge of my seat until the very end. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes a dark thriller with lots of twists and turns. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because it kept switching back and forth from past to present with hallucinations or maybe some paranormal mixed it and it was sometimes hard to follow. I think I really need to listen to it a second time to get the full affect of the story. Susan Marlowe did a great job bringing each character to life with their own distinct voice. I received this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this unbiased review.

Graphic, gore filled fun!

This story was sick and twisted and I loved it! There were some jaw dropping surprises as the plot thickened, but a couple of twists I felt were a bit expected. Overall a great read and I would recommend it to those who love gore, psychopaths and twists.
