Frederick Hadland Davis fue uno de los principales estudiosos ingleses de la cultura y la filosofía de Extremo Oriente. Escribió numerosas obras relacionadas con la historia y el folclore de Japón y China como El noveno inmortal y otros cuentos de China y Japón (1931) o Japón: de la Edad de los Dioses a la caída de Tsingtau (1916).
