“A brilliant achievement.”

Boston Herald

“Entertaining…profound….A novel for adults that unearths our buried fascination with the primal fears and truths fairy tales contain.”
Christian Science Monitor

Gregory Maguire, the acclaimed author who re-imagined a darker, more dangerous Land of Oz in his New York Times bestselling series The Wicked Years, offers a brilliant reinvention of the timeless Snow White fairy tale: Mirror Mirror. Setting his story amid the cultural, political and artistic whirlwind of Renaissance Italy—and casting the notorious Lucrezia Borgia as the Evil Queen—Maguire and Mirror Mirror will enthrall a wide array of book lovers ranging from adult fans of Harry Potter to readers of the sophisticated stories of Angela Carter.

Would you listen to Mirror Mirror again? Why?

probably not...I didn't find it that interesting and don't feel like i missed anything a 2nd listen would clarify.

Would you be willing to try another book from Gregory Maguire? Why or why not?

maybe. wicked was excellent, but sometimes the odd sex references (which serve little purpose in the story) turn me off...

I've read several of Gregory Maguire's books - Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, Wicked, Son of a Witch and A Lion Among Men. I enjoy his modern twists on well-known fairy tales and his overall writing styles. He always incorporates elements of the fairy tales and weaves them into a believable and thought-provoking plot.

This book has a nice flow, and I enjoyed it. I would have rated it 4 stars but John McDonough constantly mispronounces "Lucrezia" and "Cesare" and it drove me nuts.

Interesting re-telling of the fairy tale.

unlike Hiddensee, where his elaborate descriptive prose was entertaining, here it was overly so and tedious. an entire chapter on a girl becoming a woman and the unpleasant of it. in addition, the use of two voices was annoying. the use of the female voice was infrequent. she represented a couple female characters but not only a couple of times. the balance of the many times a female spoke was that of the prime narrator. only one voice was necessary.

unfortunately not that captivating
