Six months after Pearl Harbor, the seemingly invincible Imperial Japanese Navy prepared a decisive blow against the United States. After sweeping through Asia and the South Pacific, Japan's military targeted the tiny atoll of Midway, an ideal launching pad for the invasion of Hawaii and beyond. But the United States Navy was waiting for them.

Thanks to cutting-edge code-breaking technology, tactical daring, and a huge stroke of luck, the Americans under Admiral Chester W. Nimitz dealt the Japanese navy its first major defeat of the war. Three years of hard fighting remained, but it was at Midway that the tide turned. This vivid, in-depth best seller is the first book to tell the story of the epic battle from both the American and Japanese sides, demonstrating how America won its first and greatest victory in the Pacific - and how easily it could have been a defeat.

The story was interesting and well told. Walter Lord makes history accessible to a broad audience.

Unfortunately it was the narrator’s horrible pronunciation of so many names, places, and terms.

A fantastic book, of analysis and first hand accounts from both sides. It shows the complex nature of war, the logistics of battle and the bravery of men on both sides. A must read for any history buff.

A must for WWII knowledge

Impressed by all the time it took to put both sides of this story together, sync the time lines!

The book itself is excellent and well written. Anyone interested in military history will enjoy it.

However, the narrator horribly mispronounced word. Two examples are CINCPAC and I-121. The first he pronounced "sin see pack" instead of the correct "sink pack". The second he pronounced "one one two one" instead of the correct "eye one two one". These are just two examples of many. Anyone with a passing knowledge of the topic will shudder each time and shout curses at the narrator. Anyone who does this professionally should not be making these mistakes.

Terrible Narrator
