Publisher's summary

This is the story of Barbara and Larry Savage's sometimes dangerous, often zany, but ultimately rewarding 23,000-mile global bicycle odyssey, which took them through 25 countries in two years. Miles from Nowhere is an adventure not to be missed!

Along the way, these near-neophyte cyclists encountered warmhearted strangers eager to share food and shelter, bicycle-hating drivers who shoved them off the road, various wild animals (including a roof ape and an attack camel), sacred cows, rock-throwing Egyptians, overprotective Thai policeman, motherly New Zealanders, meteorological disasters, bodily indignities, and great personal joys. The stress of traveling together constantly for two years tested and ultimately strengthened the young couple's relationship.

As their trip ends, you'll find yourself yearning for Barbara and Larry to mount back up and keep pedaling. It's a story that makes you feel like you've grown right along with the author.

Ten Star Review

Nicely performed, this story of a couple riding their bicycles around the world really changed me when I read it in 1981. I have always been an avid cyclist, and this story inspired me to do a few 500-mile trips over the years. It is a bittersweet story, but you’re going to have to buy it to understand why. And I will NEVER bicycle in FL after reading this.

Inspirational

This is one of the most well written and narrated books I’ve listened to, and I have a large library ! I’m ready to hit the road on my bike, and look to help other riders passing through my town, as it’s on the Trans-America route. I’ll definitely be talk about this book for awhile.

Great adventure

Reading this is very bittersweet, but it is well worth it, as it really shows how a couple can work hard to get past rough patches and really enjoy life together

What an amazing journey!!!

Being a fellow cyclist I could vividly relate to some of the experiences they went through.

EXPECTED BETTER

This could have been a great cycling epic. Spoilt by imperfect prose and strangling of the English language. Irritatingly read with overemphasis of the Americanisation of English words, example: YO-GURT; SHALL-EY (chalet); BICYCLERS (cyclists) and so on.

Worst kiwi accent ever

A brilliant tale only ruined by the kiwi accent Inspiring and funny. A good listen.

Great story, annoying reading

I loved the story. Exciting, inspiring and fun. What it ruined it for me was the annoying accents. So silly and unnecessary.

What a journey

This is honestly the first book of someone’s travel adventures that I have finished. The writing was excellent with humour and honesty. My only criticism is the NZ accent, just terrible. My only other cringe moment was the attitude of the pompous Australian immigration officer. As an Australian I felt embarrassed at his attitude. I felt for Larry at hearing of Barbara’s passing so young. Definitely recommend this book.

Interesting!

Liked listening to Barb and Larry’s adventures through some remote places. A great journey! Almost had to abandon it when Jeff joined due to the narrator’s truly horrendous New Zealand accent (? A mixture of the artful Dodger from Oliver and a South African).

Great Journey

Loved this tale of adventure travel.
Fasinating look into another time and place, and an interesting perspective of cultures.
Only draw back is the awful attempts the narrator makes to recreate foreign accents. I'm sure New Zealanders, Australians and some Indians dont actually sound like South Africans trapped in 18th century England.
Overall, loved it. Just save the accents for drama class.

sorry, but that kiwi accent was awful

I enjoyed the story, but I didn't like the accents. It was a nice thought, but some of them were really difficult to listen to. Especially the Kiwi.

Narrator shouldn't attempt NZ accent....

interesting story, but the NZ accents were terrible...if you can't do it, please don't try. So painful to listen to.
