Publisher's Summary

Marin doesn't want to be a lady. She wants to kick ass and take names. But that'll be hard to do if she gets captured by an unknown enemy...

Being raised by the King and Queen of the Elves has given Marin quite a diverse background. Burdened by her humanity and femininity, she must push herself and train every day to hold her own against the elves around her. But while Marin wants to be the first girl to graduate Macon Academy as a mercenary, her mother wants her to be a lady. And an attempt by an unknown enemy to kidnap Marin is not helping her case. Between the kidnapping attempt, growing feelings for her best male friend, and now a fiery magic growing within her, Marin's life is changing in ways she can't understand. If she doesn't get a grasp on things quickly, she may lose everything she's fought so hard to gain. If she survives at all.

Fans of Kristin Cashore and Sarah J. Maas will love this fantastical adventure of passion, love, and loyalty.

A fun quick read that leaves you wanting more

I greatly enjoyed this book while traveling. It was a fun quick read and the perfect distraction while being stuck on a plane. Marin is a very kick-butt and take names sort of girl who is motivated by a single goal -finish training and become a Mercenary. Of course, nothing is that simple. From bandits to ogres Marin and her best friend try just may be able to fight off anything. Or so they hope...

Little Death Bringer Book One

Little Death Bringer Book One

Marin has been raised by the king and queen of the Elves since her parents were killed by ogres. Now she and her best friend/foster brother Favian are in their last term at the Macon Academy for mercenaries, and Marin is determined to be the first girl to graduate. Her goal is to be a protector of the realm. However, she is human and a girl. On the way to school, Marin and Favian are attacked by humans bearing an ominous warning that Marin is to be kidnapped and brought to a mysterious enemy alive. Now the leaders of the academy are determined to protect Marin and will use her upcoming trials of the school to stage an ambush for her kidnappers.

If you're looking for a Fantasy YA story with heart and the will to overcome everything, this is the book for you.

Mercenary

I loved the narrator. She did an excellent job. The story was interesting a couple things were kind of aggravated. She kept saying her female feelings. The training was great but even though it's YA I believe the immaturity is a little overboard. It was very funny.

A total lack of care

I'm starting to wonder if spending more time and effort on your cover than your story is just an entire genre now. I hate being mean in reviews, and I try to get indie titles as they're recommended to me, but this stretches that goodwill.

The actual plot is...whatever. Mostly inoffensive. Marin wants to become the first girl who graduates fighter person school, but also now she has magic and maybe she's in love. Like I said, it's whatever. Not exactly treading new ground. But the writing is what stands out as awful. It's a word salad, if that salad was a potato salad season by nothing but miracle whip. It is apparent from the first chapter that no editor ever touched this. The author pumped out a first draft, well, half a first draft, and said good enough and "published".

Fair play to the narrator too, but you can hear them stumble over sentences that needed to be edited. It's not their fault. The fault comes from whatever is going on here. It's under five hours, so it's not even novel length, and the authors library is just a massive collection of genre of the month stories.

And this is where I develop trust issues. If you're writing a million "books" without putting any care into them, why should we care? You get a handful of friends to give you some positive feedback and then it's right back to churning out half baked garbage to try and make quick buck after quick buck. But at least the cover is pretty. Something we have an entire phrase for.

I'm so done with this. I want to support independent authors, but I'd much rather have a story written with passion and care that was thought out and edited than just whoever can make the prettiest cover. Please try. If you're a YA, Reverse Harem, Sci Fi, Shifter, Paranormal Romance author who puts out 20 first drafts a year, maybe take a break and learn how to write one genre well, spend some of that cover art money on an editor, and focus on writing just a handful of good books instead.
