Publisher's summary

In this terrifying novel from the phenomenally successful Anne Rice, the illustrious vampire Lestat makes a Faustian pact with devil.

Satan has come to New Orleans with an enticing proposition. Under the name Memnoch, this lord of darkness takes Lestat on a tour through the boundaries of space and time, offering an alternative and personalised account of the Bible, exploring the events which shaped our world.

Their journey comes to an apocalyptic conclusion in hell, from which Lestat returns frail and broken. The experience has shattered his perceptions of the known universe, but can you ever trust the devil?

Memnoch the Bore

Do you want to feel as though you are back at school, being forced to read the dullest book in the world when there are 1,001 other things you'd rather be doing, including scrubbing the grout in a stranger's bathroom? Seek no further. I've just woken up with a stiff shoulder having fallen asleep (more like passed out) at my desk listening to this - and that's the third time this has happened with this dreadful book. The almost unremitting boredom and leaden pomposity of this dull tale is occasionally punctuated by hilariously bad descriptions of sexual encounters. Hearing such experiences read aloud by the master, Simon Vance, reminded me of listening to that Youtube video, "Morgan Freeman reads Fifty Shades of Grey". But at least that's supposed to be funny.
Do you enjoy reading endless Wikipedia pages about angels, archangels, choirs, denominations, pixies, nixies and widdle fwuffy faiwies? This book is for you. Do you like dressing up as characters from LOTR and gamboling through the woods with like minded companions, all over the age of 40, in capes, cardboard swords and elven hats you bought off Amazon? Ditto. Do you enjoy explaining the evolution of souls, god, the devil, demons, ghosts, hell, and Count Dracula to four year olds in such a way that even THEY won't believe you? Then Memnoch is your book.
I stuck with the book because I enjoyed the other Lestat novels I've read so far. It will be a looooooooong time before I can face another.

Audible customer

Probably the best novel I’ve read in a while. Wonderful, thought provoking storyline which was so much more than I had anticipated given the themes of the vampire chronicles previous instalments. The narration was excellent. Thoroughly enjoyed.

Is this the bible?

I love the Vampire Chronicles books. Looked forward to this book as I really enjoyed Tale of the body thief. It started well something tracking the brat prince, a new love. Then. It turned it a telling of creation, i thought this was meant to be a vampire chronicles book not a religious fiction.

I think after this book it’s the end of my road with Anne Rice books. Knowing the next one is about Armand and merrick who i have no interest in.

Don’t bother with this book unless you like a telling of Christian belief

I loved it.

Another great vampire story, yet at times it went in just a little, and didn’t grip me as much as the ones before. But still a great read in the series.

Did not finish

I listened to about 12 hours of this (!) before I just couldn’t be bothered any more. Very disappointing. I love Anne Rice and especially Lestat but I found this very boring. After a promising start it then becomes an extended telling of how Memnoch came to be the devil on earth. Sounds more interesting than it is. God is portrayed as a grumpy narcissist whereas Memnoch is full of compassion for the humans. Yawn.

Different but good

Different from the others and took a while to get into. All said, it turned into a really good read and look forward to listening to the next in the series

Exceptional narration marred by boring story

Although I liked the concept of Lestat being haunted by one of his victims, I found Anne Rice's theological reinterpretation exhaustive and, in honest, quite boring. This is a big step away from the theme of the series thus far, which I found unappealing and unnecessary.

Simon Vance's narration was pitch perfect.

Not bad..not great

While I enjoyed the begining I ened up forcing myself to finish. The religious overtones seemed a bit to much and seemed to damage the character development of Lestat we saw in the previous books. Not one of the best in the series I have read / listened to so far

Satisfied I have revisited this one

It was rather different to how I remembered it from reading it maybe 20 odd years ago. Back then it was the first book I read of Anne Rice, from that moment on I was hooked! Like always great performance by Author and Narrator!

Huge Anne Rice Fan...

So of course I loved it! I truly miss having the time to physically read her books, but this narrator makes me feel like the world of Lestat is coming to life just as it did when I read the book in the physical sense...

It is highly religion orientated, as I've seen described in some more scathing reviews, but if you read the blurb, it clearly states this premise.
Spoilers?: Lestat ends up contemplating Christian religion in such a way that those narratives almost don't feel like religious ones at the end of day, despite their clear reference to biblical events.

It's an idea on religion, and so well spoken one tends to get sucked in even if we aren't religious, if only we stop looking at it that way?

To add my own Lestat-esque touch to this review with a personally poignant and all together bohemian memory- after reading this book as a high school aged girl in a Catholic boarding school, I felt the truth of this fictional philosophy so deeply I ended up in weekend detention due to my elicited papers in Religious Studies!

It's a kind of personal delve into the personal philosophy of a person experiencing one particular religion. That 'person' also happens to be the Vampire Lestat!

Not as good as the rest

This book was not as goodas her other vampire chronicles books. But still good. I found myself wondering off in thought a bit where as the past books had me compleatly captivated. The vocals were very frustrating. The accents were annoying. I would have rathered read the book. The man speaking as lestat sounded like gru from dispicable me movies 😂

This is heavier than the previous books.

Wow. Anne Rice really went to a new level with this one. Having a break.
