Publisher's summary

From the creators of the New York Times bestselling series Campfire Stories: Close Calls comes a new original audiobook that brings to life the bold, hair-raising, and often tragic adventures of a generation of eighteenth-century frontiersmen: the Long Hunters.

Steven Rinella (The MeatEater Podcast) and Clay Newcomb (MeatEater's Bear Grease podcast) gather listeners for a new round of stories, this time drawing from the lives of the rugged Long Hunters, who include such figures as Daniel Boone, Henry Skaggs, and Kasper Mansker. These were the commercial hunters and trappers who explored and exploited the First Far West, the land across the Appalachian Mountains, in the era between the Seven Years War and the American Revolution—one of the most fabled periods of American history.

The feats of these courageous, resilient backwoodsmen forever shaped a national identity centered around individualism, capitalism, freedom, and the need for wild places and wild animals.

Excellent Review of Obscure History

This project was well researched and the audible narration was excellent too. Anyone who likes whitetailed deer, deer hunting, colonial American history, or native American history will enjoy this too.

Great insight into an interesting time in history

I thoroughly enjoyed the listen. I wasn't really sure what to expect but it was both entertaining and informative. Before listening I heard a Meateater podcast where they said this was written to be listened to, not read. I thought that was an interesting comment and had it in my mind as I listened. Now that I've completed the book, I agree with that comment. I hope Meateater continues to expand upon this series. Well done!

Another Home Run

This might be my favorite MeatEater production to date. Amazing stories, obscure wisdom, and superb narration. 10/10

Excellent history lesson on long hunting in early America

Excellent collaboration between two of my favorite Meat Eater hosts to bring to life the early history of long hunting in America. I thoroughly enjoyed the back and forth between the two hosts. It kept the story moving and engaging.

This book tells a good story about early settlers and I believe other listeners will also enjoy it.

Detail Oriented and Informative

I really enjoyed the unbiased way the info was presented. Throughout my time it seems as though most stories of history were presented with a pre ordained narrative that leads thought. I appreciate the way the research was shared that lets the audience form their own opinions.
