Publisher's summary

The film, television, and comedy legend tells the hilarious and moving story of how tough love and a sense of humor made him the man he is today

By the tender age of five, Bernie Mac had found his calling: making others laugh. He has since become the star and cocreator of Fox’s hit sitcom The Bernie Mac Show; a stand-up legend; and a hit movie star in Head of State and Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle. Now, this amazing comedian delves deep down inside to retell the poignant and hilarious story of his childhood and the people who helped shape him into the comedian - and the strong and self-reliant man - he is today.

When young Bernie Mac lost his beloved mother to breast cancer, and faced an astounding number of other hardships, he remembered the "Mac-isms" she taught him: You have to meet all of the challenges, big and small. Because how you start is how you finish. If you want a helping hand, look at the end of your arm. These tough-love lessons gave him an inner strength that led him to choose hope over despair and to follow his dreams. Maybe You Never Cry Again is a powerful testament to how a mother’s love made everything possible for Bernie Mac by teaching him to believe in himself.

PLEASE NOTE: This is the abridged edition.

Holds Your Attention

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

Due to mistakes (a few stumbles and mumbles throughout), it is clear that Bernie Mac is not a professional narrator but that is a part of the charm of listening. This is a real person telling their life story.

Any additional comments?

There are very few laughs in this book but if you are interested in learning about the man behind the laughs--his struggles, tragedies and successes--you will find this worthwhile.

He was REAL!

Y'all. What a true, heartfelt story. A voice! Always felt connected to The Mac Man. I recall the day, so vividly, reading a newspaper saying he had passed. I was sad & didn't know why. Even though I was a big fan of his comedy- and I declare him as my fav comedian confidently.

But this explains the spiritual connection I felt towards him. His depth, strife, strong-willed, compassionate steadfast and most importantly, humble soul & mindset. Such a specific & special human being. (So many parallels to my father, who too wrote his memoire- A Dream Believed, A Dream Achieved).

But outside of that, he was himself, through & through!

Bernie Mac. Now I know why I mourned you. You were real!

The best book

I literally could relate to his upbringing especially with growing up in the same city at different times. I am grateful that I was able to listen to his story. It was definitely raw, uncut, and honest from the heart.

Definitely one of the King's of Comedy!!!

Amazing story of the trials and tribulations of life. Everytime you try to get ahead and something knocks u back down. Wonderfully told by a man who left his comedy mark on the world and left us all too soon. Listening to Bernie Mac tell his story is what keeps you wanting more.
