Publisher's summary

Micah Sloane knows almost everything there is to know about Risa Clay, including the vicious betrayal she endured years ago and the distrust she’s harbored ever since. The only way for the Elite Ops agent to uncover an assassin - and banish the ghosts of his own dark past - is to use Risa as bait. But nothing has prepared him for her disarming blend of innocence and sensuality, or for his overwhelming need to protect her.…

Risa has spent six years rebuilding her life. And now, to save it, she must pose as Micah’s lover and draw a killer into the open. It’s a risky plan - especially with a man as powerfully seductive as Micah. But, as their charade becomes reality, Risa realizes the greatest danger may lie in losing her heart forever.…

A great listen and it had me hooked at Chapter 1

Typical LL book - brilliant plot as the secret Elite Ops team head another mission that is filled with ex Military/Special Forces hunks (all handsome and buff of course!) as they battle against the evils of this world that no-one else can touch. This has more of a 'mystery and thriller' type theme and I think that is why this has been listed under that category rather than the Romance genre as book 1 was.

However, don't despair as it has lots and lots of hot romance too written by the queen of erotic romance novels and, if you are familiar with her other books, she doesn't disappoint. Micah and Risa's story is hot but it's also very touching, tender and heartbreaking too as she tries to trust again whilst he battles an enemy from his past.

This was published in '09 so I beg Audible to give us the other 4 books in the series - please please please.

Worth a credit? Well it ticked all my boxes and then some - so that would be a YES.

Just Ok...

The story was just ok, the character chemistry was lacking. I may have enjoyed this better if the narration was different. I normally like this narrator but I didn't like the voice and dry way she narrated Micah, I also had a hard time with the way she pronounced specific words including the way she pronounced the hero's name, I've never heard Micah pronounced like Meekah and it drove me crazy.

Disappointed....

Would you try another book from Lora Leigh and/or Clarissa Knightly?

Yes, if it is part of the KGI series - this series....NO.

Has Maverick turned you off from other books in this genre?

Not as much as some of the other characters - particularly Jordan. Even though he redeemed himself a bit at the end. Not enough to make me like him. Too murky/gray in his motives. Too cold. He was willing to allow agents to be used and abused for the greater "good." Yikes, he was creepy to me.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Clarissa Knightly?

Yes

What character would you cut from Maverick?

Jordan

Any additional comments?

I was very, very disappointed in this book. While the plot was good - there was too many wasted scenes trying to get to the plot. I don't mind gritty and I don't mind suspense, but I DO NOT like characters that are supposed to be the good guys coming across almost as disgusting as the bad guy. Jordan really turned me off and although he was a secondary character - I found it hard to believe this "team" was a team at all. They mostly came across as cold and dispassionate. As much as I enjoy a good steamy romance - this one was over the top - headed to raunchy. Plus, it came across that the multiple sex scenes were the author's attempt to cover all positions/ways they could do it. It did not always enhance the characters or the story. It just seemed excessively gratuitous. The KGI series is much, much better.

Intense

Intense is how I describe this book, starting with page 1. There is a lot of pain, death, drama, and even rape in this book. It's got a lot more darkness than light and I think it's only fair to know that going in. The views of the killer, hero, heroine, and one or two random elite ops guys are all given. Yet Lora Leigh does an excellent job in not confusing me with who's speaking and why. I am a big fan of military romantic suspense, and this one had me flipping pages as fast as possible.

I had read some of Risa's backstory (Hidden Agendas- a tempting SEALs book) and that knowledge of her father's betrayal made me even more invested in this story. The character Micah was truly inspired, and I couldn't help but fall in love with and feel broken hearted for both him and Risa. So much pain and sadness in both their lives, yet they have the chance for love with each other.

This book could have been 5 star for me, except that several scenes really irritated me, I felt like there were too many characters running in and out, and the sex scenes got a bit boring for me after a while. Ah but don't misunderstand me- this was a great read (if a bit darker than my usual tastes) and I am glad I bought it.

Special Ops Book 2

Another great listen from Lora Leigh and Clarissa Knightly. I am really liking this series, and Maverick is Micah's story and takes place during a mission following Nathan/Noah's story from Wild Card, Book 1. This is another example of a great story with all the heat you expect from LL's writing. You also get a little better acquainted with the other members of the team and updated info on Noah. I hope these all come to Audible.

Okay

What did you like best about Maverick? What did you like least?

I liked the storyline, but the romance between the characters was actually not "hot". I actually wanted to fast foward the sex scenes. I just didn't feel the chemistry.

If you’ve listened to books by Lora Leigh before, how does this one compare?

It's at the bottom. I expect more from her.

Do you think Maverick needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Yes, I would enjoy a series, but only if they are more along the line of Wild Card. That one was awesome.

Any additional comments?

I would wait until it's on sale. Keep your credit for something else.

Hummmmmmm..........

I love Lora Leigh and I was so in love with Wild Card in which I listed to it twice.

With the above said, I couldn't wait for the next book in this series but will have to say I was extremely disappointed. I felt that the depth of the characters and the story line were severally lacking. I hope Book 3 gets back on track with the first........

Outstanding

If you could sum up Maverick in three words, what would they be?

I would like to have me a Maverick in my life -

What does Clarissa Knightly bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The way she changes her voice to the story - love it -

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

I don't think making a film out of books - you do not get the full effect when a book is turned into a movie -

Excellent! This is a Great Series

Would you listen to Maverick again? Why?

Absolutely. The story is great and the sex is steamy.

What did you like best about this story?

The premise of a special ops unit luring in a killer with a lovable victim...some parts may be a bit unbelievable but it IS fiction.

What does Clarissa Knightly bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I enjoy Clarissa Knightly's work and her accents are spot on, whether New York, Aussie, etc.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Michah's compassion for Risa.

Any additional comments?

I'm perplexed by the negative reviews...I loved this ADULT THEMED book.
