Publisher's Summary

The fate of the Alliance hangs in the balance as the masterminds behind the Anniversary Day bombings trigger the final stages of a plan decades in the making. A plan that will bring about the total destruction of every dome on the Moon.

As Moon Security Chief Noelle DeRicci struggles with the overwhelming scope of the investigation, former Retrieval Artist Miles Flint races to save the life of a man from his daughter Talia’s past. A man with vital information regarding the identity of the masterminds who planned the Anniversary Day bombings. And deep beneath the surface of Armstrong, a dome engineer makes a chilling discovery that could crack the investigation wide open.

If only he can get someone to believe him.

"This deeply satisfying eighth entry...is a very strong payoff for the series." ( Publishers Weekly)

Cool!

A satisfying ending to this saga. I wonder what's next for Flint and the Alliance.

So sad the series is over!

I love this series and am so sad that this is the last book. I have enjoyed it since the beginning and love the way each small piece has woven together throughout it. The focus is all on the story and each book contains parts of it. If you love a well crafted tale, start from book one of the retrevial artist series and work your way through. Great narration as well. I just hope that there are more tales in this series waiting to be told and that they make it into print someday.

A fitting ending - but I'm glad it's over

I really like K.K. Rusch's stories in both the "Retrieval Artist" and the "Diving" universes, but this particular splitting of the "Anniversary Day Saga" into 8 different books hasn't been as satisfying. I would rather have seen three or four complete novels than eight of what are really each incomplete novellas.

That said, the writing is as good as usual, the characters we know are all here, and most of the loose ends get tied up. There's one long-term plot arc that I can think of that is still open at the end, but that may be a part of the background of politics and change taking place in this invented society and something we see progress on with each new novel.

This novella had one job - tie up the strings from the other seven. It did that, and now we can move on.

Flinty

Excellent narration and even better story telling... The only downside is that it ends one of the best SciFi series to come along in a while... Worth the credit and so much more... Striking is the topical similarity to the machinations and bigotry we see everyday in this modern messed up world of ours...

I wish it was "Good riddance", but it's not over

She used books 6 & 7 to introduce a whole slew of characters who are not really involved in the ending. It's obvious that she will continue all their story lines in more novels.
But you can read them. I'll never read anything by her again. I wasted money on books 6 & 7 only to find out I didn't even need them for book 8, the finale.

So be warned: although she finally gives us the answer to Anniversary Day, as in all her books in this series, she doesn't tie up all the storylines, leaving you hanging. I already felt cheated because we weren't warned the series would have 8 books to get to the ending, so to have her do it again, I get angry.

Complex and well developed series

Ms. Rusch gives us a set of sympathetic, even likable characters living in a truly horrid society. The Earth Alliance is an abomination - it has sacrificed justice and individual rights in the name of free trade.

But even in this environment, we find ourselves hoping that our heroes will survive and triumph. At the same time, we gain some understanding and empathy even for the terrorists. The terrorists are willing to murder millions, but it isn't without cause.

Excellent!

Masterminds is a good wrap up to Anniversary Day series. Be sure to read or listen to the previous books in the series before this one.

What I Liked About This Series

Let me mention first Jay Snyder did a masterful job in securing the tone of this author: a perfect balance of calm and expressiveness.

The author amazes me. SF can be ruined by delving into the physics of the distant future. She does not. Rather she describes the amazing things that are there, and in short order I came to accept that is the way it is, i.e. will be. Then there is the way she helps the reader keep track of the great characters over 8 volumes. As events swirl around the many characters, she helps the reader focus of the change in place, time and person. The segues when required are perfect.

Thank you KKR. I eagerly await your next effort.

The series is over-I'm so sad.

Any additional comments?

I have absolutely loved this series and am really sad it's over. Much of the time I will start a series and tire of it after 2 or 3 books. Not so this time. Wanted to hear the end but didn't want it to end either. Brain hernia. Of course the last three books were quite short and could have been one book - nice marketing on the part of the publisher but it was still worth it.

Glad to know the ending

This was really a tying together of all the loose ends. After the last few books, I had a feeling how everything would go down. I'm ready for the next book from this author but am glad we are leaving this extended plot.

SUPERB

If you could sum up Masterminds in three words, what would they be?

EXCITING,INTRIGUING,ENTHRALLING

What other book might you compare Masterminds to, and why?

OTHER BOOKS IN THE RETRIEVAL ARTIST SERIES,SAME GENRE

What about Jay Snyder’s performance did you like?

I FELT AS THOUGH I WAS READING THE BOOK MYSELF,HIS NARRATION HELD ME ENTHRALLED FROM BEGINNING TO END.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I WAS TOTALLY CAUGHT UP IN THE LIVES OF THESE PEOPLE,SHARING EACH HIGH AND LOW MOMENT WITH THEM.

Any additional comments?

A SUPERB SERIES BY A BRILLIANT WRITER,I HOPE THERE WILL BE MORE BOOKS SET IN THIS UNIVERSE IN THE FUTURE.
