Publisher's Summary

An Adepta Sororitas novel.

In the wake of the war for Ophelia VII, Battle-Sister Evangeline of the Order of Our Martyred Lady embarks on a crusade into the darkness that lies beyond the Great Rift, seeking vengeance and revelation, but surviving the journey will only be the first and most simple test of her faith.

Listen to It Because: Delve into Imperium Nihilus with a tale of faith and fury that looks at the nature of the Adepta Sororitas and their place in the new Dark Imperium.

The Story: With the birth of the Cicatrix Maledictum the Imperium of Mankind suffers as never before. Conflict and corruption is rife on every front and precious little hope remains, save for those who hold to their faith when faced with destruction....

Denied a martyr’s death during the battle for Ophelia VII, Sister Evangeline of the Order of Our Martyred Lady is blessed with a new and grave duty: to embark on a pilgrimage beyond the Great Rift to recover a precious and powerful artefact - the Shield of Saint Katherine. Accompanied by the enigmatic Inquisitor Ravara, who seeks her own closure in the veiled regions beyond the Rift, Evangeline must find a way to bear the weight of this unasked-for destiny if she and her Sisters are to succeed in restoring a fragment of light to this new dark Imperium.

Excellent storytelling

A great book! Characters struggle with realistic problems in realistic ways and drive the story forward incredibly well with great character progression. I would definitely recommend it.

girl power

too much inquisitor nonsense, not enough Sisters! Plot holes abound-- girl power hour is here. All the male characters are weak

It’s a decent read for a Sisters of Battle book

The story plays out like a rollercoaster. When it gets going, it flows well. Though there are several slow points in the book.

Predictable Story....not a good ending.

I really like WH40k books but this one was a struggle to finish! The repetitive way the say names like "Evagaline!" and "Ari!" it just started to get under my skin. The narrator's did a good job with what the had. This book just left me as hollow as the Thousand Sons..

Okay...Great and Meh

The singing was a big turn off. But the story was great. A fresh perspective on an inquisitor. Character development was good. The emperor loving supernatural faith was very present and fun at times. All in all a good listen; great at times, meh at others.

Love! <3

Amazing story and stellar performance. Might be the best voiced audiobook I've heard the whole year. At times it felt more like audiodrama even. The emotions, the beautiful singing voice... Some scenes just brought me to tears.

Story is also everything I ever wanted in story about Sisters.

Solid

Love the beginning of the story with the sisters. Not s fan of the inquisitor or how the sister takes so long to develop as a strong character. Overall a solid story and great performance.

Rushed recording?

The worst thing was the mispronunciations and just outright misread words, for example "sounded" rather than "sundered" and so on. This doesn't live up to the usual standard expected from Black Library. I think the narrators may also be new to the source material (not a bad thing in itself) but lacked any guidance, as a lot of words unique to W40k were pronounced incorrectly, or differently each time.

I think the narrators tried to make a decent effort of putting some live and emotion into the characters, but it often fell flat.

The story was, in my opinion, just above average. The greatest moments of the book are in the middling sections. There was such a climax in the middle of the story that it was kind of all downhill towards the end.

Just really bad

The story is bad, it barely makes any sense. The characters are just your typical cliches from start to finish and the lines are just bad, what you'd expect of such characters. The voice acting is over the top, unbearable at times.

Whining Sisters of little faith!

The main Narrator sounds like a depressed kids presenter. The story is humourless, relentless, and dour; tedious beyond words.

If you like listening to endless self-absorbed whining from so called "Battle" sisters then this is the book for you. If you want back story, interesting characters, or philosophical musings and moral dilemmas aka Josh Reynolds then you won't find that here. Not even bolter porn trash. Avoid.

Bad book

I never write reviews but I feel I must with this one. I've listerned to alot of horus heresy and 40k books this is by far the worst. The story is dull no likable characters to get behind its plody and long winded. I really struggled to finish it, the only saving grace is that it was in the buy one get one free. I've listerned to other battle sisters books and really enjoyed them this is not one of them.

one of the worst 40k book i have heard so far

the story is bad. the sisters are set up against some of the toughest enemies in 40k to show how badass they are, the writer made the enemies brain dead and unresisting instead of accually dangerus, in other words the enemies in this book are just token enemies to be killed without ever posing a threat. this is just the worst problem with the book

Good start, poor execution

The Narration lets the book down with mispronunciations, and singing which are a bit jarring when listening on headphones.

Some of the Sisters in the book don't feel genuine characters, and the ending was a complete let down.

A bit underwhelming

Story was a bit slow and predictable. Narration/pronunciation a bit questionable at times. Some outright mispronounciations or mistakes. Overall not up to the usual standard. The climax was underwhelming and the narration though it tried failed to be very engaging and did not quite convey high emotion to the listener.

Great story, literally one thing that let it down

Story line 10/10
action 10/10
character development 10/10

the only thing that let it down was the lyrics to the songs that got sung. it just seemed to be out of touch with the story.

Great story by one of the best 40k writers working at the moment (imho). Brought to life by great narrators Grace Andrews and Charlotte Strevens.

Might read better than it sounds

Enjoyable story but jarring narration with a few significant mispronunciations of key franchise words that really stick out (aquila / akeela) and more singing than you'd expect in an average book. If you can cope with that it's worth a listen.

Poor voice acting.

Sister of battle voice acting is terrible. Wrong tone, words pronounced strangely and high pitched. Does not suite the material. Inquisitor voice was better. Better to read this one yourself if interested.

Felt like a flat story

I found the story to be a lot less meaty than most black Library stories. It was a bit linear and didn’t seem as grim dark as most stories involving the sisters of battle. The inquisitor would be sanctioned in any other story for sure

Powerful and raw.

I really enjoyed this story! Showing a lot of what goes on in a sisters thoughts and emotions of their faith! fantastic! Singing was cool at points, cringe at others.
