Story
With the holidays approaching, amateur sleuth Geneva Pomolo takes a minor role in a community theatre’s musical stage adaptation of A Christmas Carol. A lifelong Dickens fan, Geneva is hoping for a calm respite from the rigors of crime-solving, but her stage debut proves anything but calming. The cast is stacked with powerful egos who have deluded themselves into thinking they deserve a career in Hollywood — such as Peter Vankirk, who lands the starring role of Ebenezer Scrooge.

Immediately, amateur sleuths Geneva and Iris suspect foul play: there are faint skid marks leading to the car as if he were dragged and dumped there. Publisher's Summary
Iris Reeve’s young niece, Nanette, invites Iris and Geneva Pomolo to a birthday party at a lavish estate belonging to Leandra Bosworth. Leandra is a society lady renowned in the community for her charitable work, and she is also Nanette’s boss. Iris and Geneva - both of them amateur sleuths - are expecting a relaxing weekend getaway in rural Indiana. But the Bosworth household proves to be anything but relaxing. There’s the aggressive ex-boyfriend who is still hanging around...the daughter who is secretive, anxious, and high-strung...and the teenage granddaughter who seems entirely too invested in boys...
Iris and Geneva hope to quietly slip away after the party, but things take a dark turn when Leandra is found strangled in her office. Everyone at the party has a reason for wanting her dead, and all of them are suspects. As the two women attempt to unpeel the layers of the crime, they uncover mystery after mystery. What exactly has the security guard been doing in the family guest house? What secret is the granddaughter hiding? Who has been blackmailing various members of the Bosworth family? As signs point more and more to Nanette’s role in the murder, Iris and Geneva must work overtime to exonerate her before she’s imprisoned for a crime she didn’t commit.

A Birthday Party with a surprise
A short cozy mystery that kept me guessing till the end. There were a fair number of suspects, but I’m not sure enough background was given to actually figure it out on our own. As the details were revealed, everything made perfect sense.
Donna Muse has created an interesting amateur sleuth in Geneva Pomolo. I’ll be checking out more of her cozy mysteries.
This was my first listen by Dean Ruple and I really enjoyed it. I’m sure I’ll be checking out more of his performances.

a very active story
First off, I must admit I felt no empathy for Leandra when the story began and most definitely by the end of it. She just wasn't a likable person especially to her family and all her affairs and husbands- WTH!!!?? There are so many secrets and connivers and subplots that my mind was reeling. I had no idea who done it. I voluntarily listened to a free copy of this and am giving an honest review. The narrator did a good job.

A fun cosy mystery
This is a fun short cosy mystery. This is the first book by this author and series that I have listened to but it was fun and easy to listen to, so I might just have to check out the rest of the series. The only downside is I like my stories a bit longer, to fit in as many twists as possible. Otherwise the story is good with fun characters and an interesting mystery. There was a a number of characters, which means plenty of suspects to keep you guessing, as well as clue so you can work out the killer for yourself.
When Iris 's niece lands a new job and the boss throws a party to celebrate her own birthday, Iris and Geneva never thought they would be investigating a murder by the end of the night. Leandra wasn't well liked by the people who new her and that includes her own family but does one of the family members really have a strong enough reason to kill her? What about the staff she was constantly firing and shouting at for the smallest mistakes? Iris fearing her niece is the one who will get the blame, (not being actual family) she sets out to find the killer along with some helpful notes shoved under her door.
I found it unusual for a man to be the narrator when the main characters were both females but he does such a good job that I soon lost my self in his words. I hope to hear more books read by him in the future.
