Sein Gastgeber Conrad Popinga wurde erschossen, Duclos mit der Tatwaffe in der Hand gesichtet. Maigret hat es bei seinen Ermittlungen in der Hafenstadt Delfzijl nicht leicht: Die niederländischen Kollegen wollen um jeden Preis einen Skandal vermeiden, der vermeintliche Täter möchte den Fall lieber selbst lösen. Erschwerend kommt hinzu, dass Maigret der Landessprache nicht mächtig ist.
