'Truth is stranger than fiction' is a cliche that is clamoring for recognition in the dearth of good books today. This story is based on a real man and his philosophy. Written in 1929, with snake oil salesmen, prohibitionists, and nouveau riche (before the crash) the narration was annoying at first. Narrators read the book as written. No one writes fiction in the language of Shakespeare today, either. I first saw the movie and felt it was special in spite of the soppy romance between Rock Hudson and Jane Wyman. The book is better.

Great story, but such a bass voice was difficult to understand much of the time.

difficult to follow

It isn’t the full unabridged version. I love this book and wish it was unabridged.

Missing some very important chapters. I love this book.

I know this story from when I was a teen. So I know it’s a good story. But my goodness! Lots C. Douglas deserves better. The man sounds like his dentures don’t fit right and so he cannot properly enunciate, although his inflections were okay. The female readers were much worse. They sounded like bad high school play actors. Maybe trying to make up for the man’s poor enunciation by over-pronouncing everything, and speaking very slowly and deliberately- as if to a child of poor mental acuity. I couldn’t stand it and gave up. I’ll have to re-read the book myself once I’m retired and have the time and rested eyes for it.

Worst readers ever - ruined a good story
