Brilliant stories

This compendium of sci-fi short stories is excellent! Hugh Howey is at his core a short story writer. Even the Silo books were originally published as short stories, now compiled into novels, so he is in his element here. (Isaac Asimov did the same, and even Charles Dickens published his works as serials, so he's in good company.)

Howey is a master of the gut-punching sci-fi twist. The stories are gripping and thought-provoking. The author's afterword on the stories gives extra context on what they mean to him. Some of the best ones are the most personal to him, like the first one, in which mountain climbing on an alien world is used to explore imposter syndrome, and the last one, where Howey's true experience of being present at ground zero of 9/11 is juxtaposed with aliens who can perceive four-dimensional space-time (that one is rather avant-garde, but it works.)

This book includes the conclusion of the Silo saga, over three short stories. Make sure you finish the Silo trilogy before reading these. Although some people don't like how it ends, the stories are high quality. I wanted to know what happened after the books - now I do.

One story (the second one) has a lot of coarse language. If you don't like that, you can always skip it.

I recommend this book to fans of Hugh Howey/Silo, and anyone who likes sci-fi short stories in the tradition of Isaac Asimov.

Why is this book in the silo saga?

Terriblely narrated, I could care less your thoughts on each short story. This is just a bunch of small stories stringed together to make a crappy book that makes no sense.

After Wool, big disappointment

Too much sex, defecation and foul language. The stories may be ok, but I want to read a higher class author, with enough creativity to not use cheap tactics. Ugh!
