In the land of Dorimare, on the shores of the Dapple and the Dawl, the law-abiding residents of Lud-in-the-Mist are plagued by an illegal influx of fairy fruit enticing people to acts of poetry, dancing, and other dangerous flights of fancy. When respectable Mayor Nathaniel Chanticleer finds his family entangled in the scandal, he must call upon both his sharp legal mind and his unacknowledged creative spirit to craft a reconciliation with the Faerie. Dare to embrace your wild side in this classic fantasy. Suitable for ages eight and up.

The book remained difficult for me. There seemed to be no difference in the voices of many of the characters and the odd cadence seemed to me to exacerbate that problem. The story itself was delightful.
The story was enchanting

The opening is captivating and totally worth it. Mirrlees constructs a unique merchant society with fascinating taboos against all things fairy. The worldbuilding is genuinely original, some of the very first 'fairy core'. The middle sections do meander somewhat through investigations and political maneuvering that slow the momentum, but if you can stick with it, the final act delivers a spectacular, surreal payoff that makes the journey worthwhile.
What makes this work special is how it handles reconciliation between the practical and the magical. The narrator's performance elevates these themes beautifully, making this a perfect audiobook experience for anyone who loves liminal fiction or Neil Gaiman's recommendations.
Worth the patience required for the middle stretch.
