Born to be nobody.

Destined to be king.

Doomed to be a villain.

What matters?

Loyalty matters.

Loyalty Binds Me.

Artist Hans Holbein is summoned to the house of Sir Thomas More to receive the commission of a lifetime. He will leave with a secret that could cost him his life. He will learn the truth about the life of King Richard III, the man that the Tudor dynasty has been at great pains to villify. From his return from exile with his brother, King Edward IV, to his rise to become the king's most loyal, most trusted, and most powerful subject. From his flourishing personal life to his seizure of the throne from his nephew. This unfashionable truth is as nothing compared to the reason for hiding it.

Hans Holbein is about to be asked to hide England's greatest secret.

A secret that could tear apart the fragile Tudor regime.

This story was based in so much known fact, it wove a great tale that you could actually believe. It has certainly given me a different perspective on such a well known and often misrepresented character. The narrator’s telling was enthralling!

Wonderfully written and narrated

This story was well told and interesting. The afterword, factual and theory bases, was intriguing.

Interesting whether true or not

The author is great, I have enjoyed reading his non fiction books a lot and also listening to his podcasts or viewing his videos. You can find a lot of content of his on History Hit (Im not getting paid to say so!) :) He is a self proclaimed Ricardian so his work has that flavor to it, as this book certainly does. The only thing that didn’t resonate with me was the depiction of Richard in his youth. Lewis has him tra-la-la-ing thru the garden at one point at, I believe, age 18. It was a bit cringe-worthy. That said, it got decidedly better. Also not sure the depiction of Margaret Beaufort helped readers let go of Phillipa Gregory’s influence on their thoughts of her, which I found an odd inclusion because Lewis as clearly stated that he doesn’t buy into that whole narrative (trying not to be a spoiler!)
I will definitely read the second book. The subject matter interests me and I enjoy the theories posited by Lewis. I’m not sure I buy them all but the truth is we don’t know how much of the Tudor propaganda is based on fact and how much is made up. Objectively, we can see in the historical record that Richard could be cold and ruthless (Earl Rivers and Hastings, anyone?) to meet his ends…doesn’t mean he off’d his nephews but certainly lays a foundation for reasonable accusation. If you like the story of Richard, read this book! Its fun.
