In the wilderness, one false step can make the difference between a delightful respite and a brush with death.

On a beautiful summer afternoon in 1998, Dan Stephens, a 22-year-old canoeist, was leading a trip deep into Ontario's Quetico Provincial Park. He stepped into a gap among cedar trees to look for the next portage - and did not return. More than four hours later, Dan awakened from a fall with a lump on his head and stumbled deeper into the woods, confused.

Three years later, Jason Rasmussen, a third-year medical student who loved the forest's solitude, walked alone into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness on a crisp fall day. After a two-day trek into a remote area of the woods, he stepped away from his campsite and made a series of seemingly trivial mistakes that left him separated from his supplies, wet, and lost, as cold darkness fell.

Enduring days without food or shelter, these men faced the full harsh force of wilderness, the place that they had sought out for tranquil refuge from city life. Lost in the Wild takes listeners with them as they enter realms of pain, fear, and courage, as they suffer dizzying confusion and unending frustration, and as they overcome seemingly insurmountable hurdles in a race to survive.

Great survival story.

A narrator should have some idea of the content in which they are reading . For example, “IC” is not one C. “It’s
IC for “Incident Commander”.

I enjoyed these harrowing stories and also enjoyed the alternating story arrangement of them as they headed towards their separate conclusions. The narrator was enjoyable and easy to listen to.

I disagree with other reviewers who were displeased with the alternating story format. It felt like taking two journeys simultaneously.

Great book. I highly recommended it.

Two engaging stories of survival in the wilderness.

I appreciated the simultaneous views of getting lost in wilderness. Very instructive and meaningful to me.

Gripping Accounts

Another reviewer mentioned the construction of this book — jumping back and forth between the two stories told — as confusing at times. I agree. Still, it was an enjoyable, and instructive, ‘listen.’

Can be confusing if you aren’t listening closely

Authors out there listen to me and make more of this kind of book. Both stories were fascinating, sometimes someone made a bad choice but that's interesting too. These weren't huge international media stories and there must be more out there. I don't mind that they were separate and basically unrelated. Stretching out each one to a whole book wouldn't have been as good. I wish there were more like this. Two survival stories in one book, even if not from the same area.

I Love This Book - Make more!

I really enjoyed the stories told in this book. There are a lot of little details but it helps to paint the picture of what it is like to be lost in the wilderness. I recommend this book!

Great stories!

It was a very good story but there are two people
That are lost. In times it gets confusing as to which person they are talking about as the stories are intermingled

Very good story.

Overall very interesting stories, and this might have been fine as a print book, but as an audiobook it got confusing and muddled. The book's written in a style that jumps back and forth between different survival sagas, but as an audiobook you find yourself constantly thinking we were still talking about the other guy.

When happy camping goes bad

Even though I knew that the people telling the story had survived, I got very emotional in the end.

Very emotional
