Sahih Al Bukhari is a collection of sayings and deeds of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), also known as the sunnah. The reports of the Prophet's sayings and deeds are called ahadith. Bukhari lived a couple of centuries after the Prophet's death and worked extremely hard to collect his ahadith. Each report in his collection was checked for compatibility with the Qur'an, and the veracity of the chain of reporters had to be painstakingly established.

Until about 1800, the West and the Islamic realm were like two adjacent, parallel universes, each assuming itself to be the center of the world while ignoring the other. As Europeans colonized the globe, the two world histories intersected and the Western narrative drove the other one under. The West hardly noticed, but the Islamic world found the encounter profoundly disrupting.

The Qur'an, believed by Muslims to be the word of God, was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad 1,400 years ago. It is the supreme authority in Islam and the living source of all Islamic teaching; it is a sacred text and a book of guidance that sets out the creed, rituals, ethics, and laws of the Islamic religion. It has been one of the most influential books in the history of literature. Recognized as the greatest literary masterpiece in Arabic, it has nevertheless remained difficult to understand in its English translations.

Sometimes rumor, sometimes based on fact and often misunderstood, the tenets of Islamic law and dogma were not set in the religion's founding moments. They were developed, like in other world religions, over centuries by the clerical class of Muslim scholars. Misquoting Muhammad takes listeners back in time through Islamic civilization and traces how and why such controversies developed, offering an inside view into how key and controversial aspects of Islam took shape.

Story
What happens when authorities you venerate condone something you know is wrong? What does this mean about what you’ve been venerating? No issue brings this question into starker contrast than slavery. Every major religion and philosophy condoned or approved of it, but in modern times there is nothing seen as more evil. Americans confront this crisis of authority when they erect statues of Founding Fathers who slept with their slaves. And Muslims faced it when ISIS revived sex slavery, justifying it with verses from the Quran and the practice of Muhammad.

Muhammad (peace be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah, and those who are with him, are severe against the disbelievers, and merciful among themselves. You see them bowing and falling down prostrate (in prayer), seeking bounty from Allah and (His) Good Pleasure. The mark of them (i.e. of their Faith) is on their faces (fore heads) from the traces of prostration (during prayers). This is their description in the Taurah (Torah).

Publisher's Summary
Islam has been one of the most powerful religious, social, and political forces in history. Over the last 1,400 years, from origins in Arabia, a succession of Muslim polities, and later empires expanded to control territories and peoples that ultimately stretched from southern France to East Africa and South East Asia.
Yet many of the contributions of Muslim thinkers, scientists, and theologians, not to mention rulers, statesmen, and soldiers, have been occluded. This book rescues from oblivion and neglect some of these personalities and institutions while offering the listener a new narrative of this lost Islamic history. The Umayyads, Abbasids, and Ottomans feature in the story, as do Muslim Spain, the savannah kingdoms of West Africa, and the Mughal Empire, along with the later European colonization of Muslim lands and the development of modern nation-states in the Muslim world.
Throughout, the impact of Islamic belief on scientific advancement, social structures, and cultural development is given due prominence, and the narrative is complemented by portraits of key personalities, inventions, and little known historical nuggets. The history of Islam and of the world's Muslims brings together diverse peoples, geographies, and states, all interwoven into one narrative that begins with Muhammad and continues to this day.

Truly polemical
I wasted my time with this book. It was about glorifying Islam and it's adherents. For example, the conquest of the world from Spain to India (an imperial endeavor as far as I could tell) was glorious while the imperialism of the non Islam world was awful! One of the best examples of the author's blindness to the dark side of Islam was a chapter about the Christian enslavement of West Africans compared to a one sentence mention of the enslavement of East Africans by the Omanis!

A Masterpiece!
It's amazing how world history books are usually about European Christian history and skip over the Golden Age of Islam, which happened while Europe was in its Dark Ages. A book that all Muslims and Non-Muslims should read.
This is in no way a complete detailed history of Islam, but rather an introduction to Islamic History. Feels like an amazing preface to a more detailed history book that I would love to read one day, if and when it comes from the same author.

A great dive into the forgotten history of Islam!
I’m so happy I found this gem of a book. So much of the history I thought I knew is so one sided.
Thank you for exploring the significant time stamps of Islamic history, and bringing to light such a rich and dynamic world stemming 1400 years back. The narration was very good and the flow of the book was seamless, I listened to the whole thing in one sitting as it was too interesting to put down.
I’m inspired to do some further reading on the topic of the Caliphs and the fall of the Arab world in the last century.
Overall, I recommend this to anyone who is looking to find out more about the journey of the muslims since the Prophet and how Islam was implemented throughout time, as well as its contributions to our world today.
