Publisher's summary

Detective Michael Gideon is used to being handed L.A.'s oddest cases, but his newest one assigned itself. When Gideon's K-9 partner, Sirius, rescues a lost dog from a pack of coyotes, the duo tries to return her home - only to discover her owner is missing.

Heather Moreland has clearly disappeared under suspicious circumstances, and the more Gideon digs into her past, the more he's convinced of her abduction.

As Gideon strives to help the missing woman, he is also troubled by the suspicious death of Detective Langston Walker, the leader of a support group for families of murder victims. The last time they'd met, Walker told Gideon about a cold case he had reopened, making Gideon wonder if the detective's demise is the accident everyone believes.

In this third book in Alan Russell's gripping cop-K-9 series, Gideon and Sirius race to save a young woman - and stop another killer from striking again.

Clever

Enjoyed the quips and puns which gave relief to the " phyco"logical twist. The depth of the canines human bonds was a satisfying read by itself!

More than a a dog

More than a dog is lost in this story. The tenacity of detectives pursuing murderers, no matter where the trail goes brings you to the edge of the story and tips you over.

Great story

The story had me hooked from the beginning. Three mysteries to solve. The bond between humans and dogs is inspiring. You feel characters pain.

The smell of a dog!

Would you listen to Lost Dog again? Why?

Absolutely, I am a fan of Sirius and his owner.

What other book might you compare Lost Dog to and why?

The series has two other books, both winners THE BURNING MAN, & GUARDIANS OF THE NIGHT.

What about Jeff Cummings’s performance did you like?

Perfect. The book is in first person and he does all of the characters perfectly. Gideon is a complex K9 cop with many sides. His knowledge of music and literature is extraordinary. His friends are few, although he easily relates to people--even though he denies it. Sirius does make it difficult to reject him--unless you're the bad guy or try to his man.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I tried. However it is a long one and I had to break it up. However, it is a "page turner".

Any additional comments?

Watching, listening to the working of the case, the tenacity of the man and dog as well as the absolute goodness of the man, the professionalism of the cop is captivating. In this story, Sirius rescues a rescue dog that has been turned loose by his owner as she is abducted. In addition to attempting to find the missing owner, he meets a retired cop who leads a self-help group for relatives and friends of murdered victims. A cold case of his new friend becomes a new case for Gideon. I strongly recommend this story in book or audio format.

Good Man/Dog suspence series

Any additional comments?

I have really enjoyed the Gideon and Sirius series so far. Alan Russell has set his own bar quite high with the first two books. This is the third and although I enjoyed it very much, I must say that I found the first two a little more suspenseful. I found this one to be slightly predictable.
The premise of the story is good and again it is suspenseful. A young woman recently filing for a divorce from an abusive husband is abducted. One year earlier she had adopted a severely abused dog who trusted no one. It took months but finally there is a breakthrough and they become inseparable. Now she's been abducted.
Ready? What kind of dog is it? It's a bloodhound mix!
Anyway, there's a good story here and other things going on. Very entertaining and recommended. I do HIGHLY RECOMMENDED the series.
Books don't have to be read/listened to in order but better that way, I think.

Want More Sirrius

A couple of books back I mentioned my concern over Gideon leaving Sirrius in the car. This book explains the special care and automobile customizations completed for a police K-9. Thanks and Yay!

I love this series. Gideon is relentless in his pursuit of the truth and Sirrius is the best partner any detective could ever have. The story teaches us that not giving up is a choice. I hope to see much more of this series. I have a weakness for K-9s and war dogs. Dogs who give up so much and so willingly out of loyalty and love. There are few humans that would do the same.
